  NATIVE AMERICAN MOHEGANS
Uncas then removed to the interior and placed himself at the head of the Mohegan clans who occupied lands east of the Connecticut river, and west of the great Pequot River now known as the Thames.
Uncas then proposed that the fortunes of the day should be decided by themselves in single combat, and the lives of their warriors spared.
Uncas died in 1682/3, having been sachem of the Mohegans since the overthrow of the Pequots in 1637.

The real Uncas was a Mohegan chief, son of Owenoco, who in 1626 married a daughter of Sassacus, chief of the Pequot, and became one of their leaders.
Uncas accordingly attacked and conquered Sequasson, sachem of the Connecticut river, and bravely defended himself in a constant warfare with the neighboring tribes.
Although Uncas was too old to be of much service during King Philip's war, his son, Oneco, with 200 Mohegan warriors and a greater number of subjugated Pequots, marched with Major John Talcott to Brook-field and Hadley, and at the latter place aided in defeating 700 of King Philip's force.

Sizing up a situation in which he knew his forces were badly outnumbered, Uncas quickly devised a strategy, halted his braves on high ground at the northern margin of the plain and explained his plan to the Mohegan warriors.
However, when the pursuing Uncas arrived at the top of the same gorge moments later and saw Miantonomo hobbling away into the woods on the opposite side, determination and hatred for his enemy gave wings to his feet.
Uncas thought it appropriate that Miantonomo be buried near the place where he had originally been captured and that a small pile of rocks be placed as a marker on the gravesite.

Most of the general public think of Uncas in the manner he was portrayed by Cooper, as epitomizing the "Noble Savage." Historians of Native America, however, regard the historical Uncas quite differently.
Uncas, however, made a place for himself by doing their bidding, which led to the most notorious chapter of his life (and one that has cast him as a villain), the murder of the Narragansett sachem, Miantonomi.
Captured by Uncas in war (Miantonomi, by the way, was weighed down by chain mail armor that a colonial well-wisher had given him), the two briefly discussed an alliance, according to Oberg.

 UNCAS
Uncas learned quickly how to negotiate between cultures in the conflicts that developed as natives and newcomers, Indians and English, maneuvered for access to and control of frontier resources.
According to Oberg, Uncas was an astute observer of the newcomers, and quickly forged alliances rooted sometimes in genuine affection (as in the case of John Mason), but more often in strategic calculation and implied threat, by which the English were convinced of the necessity of a relationship with the Mohegans.
Oberg’s Uncas emerges in the biography as a complex human being, which is no small feat given the nature of the documentary record with which the author had to work.

Because Uncas closely allied himself with the English yet managed to maintain a greater cultural gap between his people and the colonists than did many other leaders, he was unique.
It allows Oberg to escape the tired formulations that have plagued treatments of Uncas: the noble savage who helps Euramericans only to inevitably disappear, or the traitor to his race who aids and abets the natural enemy because doing so appears to be in his own self-interest.
Though Uncas was born into a "world in balance," to borrow the title of Oberg's first chapter, he soon found himself and the Mohegans a "subject people," gaining little from their tributary status with the Pequots (p.
