Unconditional Election teaches that before the foundation of the world only a limited number of people were chosen to be recipients of God’s saving grace, while the remaining population were destined to be left in their depravity (Ephesians 1:4; Romans 9:11-13; 1 Peter 2:8; Revelation 13:8).

Unconditional election - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unconditional election is a doctrine which teaches that God, in eternity, chose out of all mankind those whom He would save by means of Christ's death and the work of the Holy Spirit, for no other reason than His own wise, just, and gracious purpose.
Unconditional Election was first codified in the Belgic Confession (1561), re-affirmed in the Canons of Dordrecht (1619) arising from the Quinquarticular Controversy, and is an historic part of the Reformed faith as found in the various Reformed Confessions.
In regard to the elect, we regard calling as the evidence of election, and justification as another symbol of its manifestation, until it is fully accomplished by the attainment of glory.

Election is very important, and if you are truly called by God then you will not be conformed to this world and will not follow the pattern of this world, you will be different.

 "Unconditional Election" by Loraine Boettner
Their election, of course, includes the opportunity of hearing the gospel and receiving the gifts of grace, for without these means the great end of election would not be attained.
Apart from this election of individuals to life, there has been what we may call a national election, or a divine predestination of nations and communities to a knowledge of true religion and to the external privileges of the Gospel.
A third form of election taught in Scripture is that of individuals to the external means of grace, such as hearing and reading the Gospel, association with the people of God, and sharing the benefits of the civilization which has arisen where the Gospel has gone.

Election - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The universal acceptance of elections as a tool for selecting representatives in modern democracies is in sharp contrast with the practice in the democratic archetype, ancient Athens, where elections were considered an oligarchic institution and where most political offices were filled using sortition, also known as allotment.
When elections are called, politicians and their supporters attempt to influence policy by competing directly for the votes of constituents in what are called campaigns.
In order for democratic elections to be fair and competitive, opposition parties and candidates must enjoy the rights to freedom of speech, assembly, and movement as necessary to voice their criticisms of the government openly and to bring alternative policies and candidates to the voters.

The Five Points of Calvinism: Unconditional Election
Election is, therefore, that decree of God which He eternally makes, by which, with sovereign freedom, He chooses to Himself a people, upon whom He determines to set His love, whom He rescues from sin and death through Jesus Christ, unto Himself in everlasting glory.
For the truth of election not only means that God chooses those who are to be His people; and it not only means that God determines that they shall live in heaven; but it means also that God guarantees a walk of holiness for His people in the midst of the world.
The decree of election is the foundation of all the blessings of salvation.

Some Arguments Against Unconditional Election - TheologyWeb Campus
If unconditional election is true, it seems like God is creating souls, choosing not to elect them -- ipso facto cutting them off from any chance to not remain sinners -- and then destroying them shortly thereafter for remaining sinners.
Most who believe in unconditional election believe that there is nothing about us which serves to inform, or even remotely influence, God's decision to elect.
Thus, they don't entail unconditional election; in fact, the precise nature of election is underdetermined with repsect to biblical data.

Only Wonder Understands » Blog Archive » Unconditional Election   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
Election comes when the people of God “opt in” to God’s kingdom of grace, or even more radically, non-election happens when they “opt-out” of the righteousness that God gives.
The question that arises is whether election is an “opt-in” process, that is, one has to actively choose to be a part of God’s kingdom, or whether it is an “opt-out” process, where one has to actively reject God in order to bypass election.
This is a misunderstanding of the term “unconditional.” It is true that faith is required for salvation; it is true that whoever believes shall have everlasting life.

Calvinism Doctrine of Unconditional Election - Predestination, John Calvin

The doctrine of Unconditional Election is a doctrine that was created by those who are Reformed in theology.

Unconditional means: Not to be limited to any conditions, or prerequisites whatsoever.
(1) By unconditional election we do not mean that man elects God, or elects to be saved (to illustrate, here is a much quoted blunder: God casts His vote, the Devil casts his, the score is tied now, one to one; whichever way you cast your vote is the deciding factor).
There is this great difference in the election of the saved and the rejection of the rest of men.

Unconditional Election is the doctrine which states that God chose those whom he was pleased to bring to a knowledge of himself, not based upon any merit shown by the object of his grace and not based upon his looking forward to discover who would "accept" the offer of the gospel.
I suggest that election is a part of an entire "salvation package" that includes calling, regeneration, faith and repentance, and more and that none of it is based on anything we do, including faith.
Thus, election isn't of individuals, election is of the corporate body of Christ.

Uncondtional Election & Predestination vs. Free Moral Agency
Those who are saved and destined to eternal life are said to be "elect." The alternative to Calvin's view of unconditional election would be free will or free moral agency - the doctrine that salvation is conditional and each individual has a choice whether or not to meet the conditions of forgiveness.
If salvation is unconditional and nothing one does will affect his salvation, then a person decreed to be among the elect would be saved no matter how he later acted.
Hence, the "election" or choice (v11) does not refer to the election to eternal life, but to the ones through whom these promises to Abraham would be fulfilled.
