Tubewad - Television 13 TV Shows That Should Never Have Been Cancelled
When a show drops in the ratings, the analysis begins…to explain why a TV show is canceled is almost impossible.
The gimmicky contest setup should have garnered the show a lot more viewers, and it’s depressing that this wasn’t the case: though the cast of characters was almost entirely ripped off from Blue Velvet, the show had the balls to be surreal and disturbing in a time where all audiences wanted was safety and escape.
Perhaps the FOX comedy division is run by a masochist who loves these types of shows, and he knows that because they challenge the audience that they’ll be on the trash heap after one season and he’ll get to feel the hot hot burning sorrow that comes with cancellation.

DVDFILE.COM: Undeclared - The Complete Series Review
And now we have an opportunity to soak in the show as one large entity, a series that's less a sitcom than it is a too-short, bitingly astute musing on the ins and outs of a child's expulsion into the real world (well, college, at least).
Undeclared may have bombed on TV, but its DVD release is really one for the time capsule.
Excluding the possibility that the show might come back on the air, this is one of the best collections of extras this show could have ever hoped to receive.

IGN: Undeclared: The Complete Series Review
Given that this is a half-hour show, and a dramedy to boot, I understand that it must be difficult giving each character an equal amount of time to develop and come into their own, but we don't get that from Monica Keena's Rachel or Carla Gallo's Lizzie.
Shows like this don't come along often, and when they do they deserve to be cherished.
Unfortunately, the show doesn't have many opportunities for the side-channels to be used so you're left with most of the audio coming from the center channel, with the music on the sides.

Debuting fall 2001, the show was touted by FOX as “Freaks and Geeks goes to college.” Judd Apatow—who had previously guided “FREAKS” to cult-favorite status, in spite of being cancelled by NBC—produced the show.
UNDECLARED revolves around Steven Karp (Jay Baruchel), a nerdy 18 year-old, who grew seven inches over the past year and is now facing a new set of challenges as a college freshman.
The magic of UNDECLARED was in its quirky characters, clever dialog and full-frontal exploitation of life’s idiosyncrasies.

Undeclared had a good time slot, a good lead in, and it was an incredible show, it just wasn't given the support by the network.
Undeclared was one of the best comedies FOX has churned out in a while, and only failed because like a lot of other stuff FOX has tried, it's simply too unique and the humor just went over the heads of the general public (oh listen to me, now I sound pretentious like the last guy!)
Undeclared (like FandG) was one of the shows that they tried duplicating it but it just won't be as good as the first time.

With its future still undeclared by Fox, the comedy's freshman year closes out with a guest spot by Ben Stiller, who plays the trashy, shaggy former stepdad of Lizzie's ex, Eric, who still regrets losing her.
Sadly, the only thing Lizzie wants to repair is her hair after a faulty dye job turns her into a frantic, frizzy blonde mess with no patience for her current beau, the unhelpful—and hopeless—Steven.
Undeclared is about a bunch of outcasts from highschool who meet in collage and want to start fresh.

Of course, the scene also demonstrates the show's possible shortcomings, that it merely replicates some of the same old youth stereotypes, as, for instance, college as a time for sexual experimentation and liberation.
These seeming contradictions are just a few of the reasons to love Undeclared, a show with a wealth of characters who manage to seem real individuals and category types at the same time.
Undeclared has already achieved the impossible in the first episode: it made me nostalgic for a time in my life that I truly loathed.

Zap2it - TV news - 'Undeclared' Crew Smiles Despite Uncertain Fate
The "we" in his joke refers to the cast and crew of "Undeclared," the FOX comedy Apatow created that faces an early end this season -- the network cut its order from 22 episodes to 17 -- and an uncertain future beyond that.
Apatow says the genesis of "Undeclared" came when the high school-set "Freaks and Geeks" was on the verge of cancellation in 2000.
"Undeclared" has only two more episodes scheduled for the season, both of which Apatow chose to screen for the audience Monday.

Due to the positive response that this show has generated amongst critics, adults, and the college-aged audience, we feel confused as to why you'd butcher a show that, if treated right, would make your network shine.
Recently, new episodes of the show were cut down from 22 to 17.
We are unaware why you won't give this show a fair chance, since it is better than most of the shows that are currently on air.

Unloved 'Undeclared': Being undecided about your studies is natural for a college freshman — and fatal for a TV show.
The focal point for Undeclared's view of college life is Steven Karp (Jay Baruchel), a newly tall frosh who hopes to leave his dorky high school past behind.
Undeclared tries to elevate that semi-comic relief into a show of its own.

For those 25 of us who were intense fans of NBC's short-lived "Freaks and Geeks", watching "Undeclared," the new series on Fox from F&G executive producer Judd Apatow, is like having sex on the rebound.
So now we move on to "Undeclared," which instead of taking place in high school in 1980 is set in a college at right this very moment.
One problem may be that the show is only 30 minutes, unlike the hour-long F&G, just not enough time to build up a deep story.

REVIEW / 'Undeclared' both sweet and savvy / Comedy nails freshman year
What Judd Apatow failed to accomplish in "Freaks and Geeks," his critically praised but short-lived NBC series about high school, he more than makes up for in "Undeclared," a dead-on look at college life that manages to be both hilarious and sweet.
Looking for all the world like a hit, "Undeclared" has a fun-loving, smart and astute approach to comedy and college, when the world awaited you, but so did lots of beer, awkward moments and endless studying.
Set at the fictitious University of North Eastern California, the show brings us the life of Steven Karp (Jay Baruchel, a breakout star), who as a high school senior was skinny, nerdy and hopeless.

Following the collegiate misadventures of Steven Karp (Jay Baruchel), Undeclared tackles everything from long-distance relationships to parental divorce in a rapid-fire fashion that, despite its comedic trappings, goes straight for the gut.

Best of all, a 70-minute recording of the cast and crew's appearance at the Museum of Television and Radio allows Apatow and his compatriots to shine a light on the realities of making network television in the 21st century while illustrating their affection for their work.
