  Encyclopedia: Under Milkwood
Under Milk Wood was originally a radio play and later a stage play by Dylan Thomas.
The storyteller invites the audience to listen in on the dreams of the fictional small Welsh village of Llareggub (the name is "bugger all" spelt backwards, but appeared in print as Llaregyb so as not to offend), and their innermost thoughts and dreams are laid bare to us.
He continued to work on the idea for eight years, and on 9 September 1953, he delivered a full draft of Under Milk Wood to the BBC as he left for a tour of America, intending to revise the manuscript on his return.

Milkwood Review is an on-line, interdisciplinary journal that seeks to create a web environment in which poetry, fiction, non-fiction, speculative essays, short scholarly articles, hypertext, original musical compositions, and visual art are presented in a form appropriate to each discipline--with the publishing space designed around the work and not the reverse.
The title of the journal reflects this bias in that it is derived from Dylan Thomas' verse-drama, Under Milkwood.
At this point, Milkwood Review is not a print journal and is not designed to compete with literary journals but to expand the publishing possibilities for artists whose work may or may not be adequately presented in other formats.

"Under Milkwood," a play recounting the lives of people in a small Welsh town, challenges the actor to play up to four characters in the play and helps them develop distinct qualities for each part.
"'Under Milkwood,' originally written in the form of a radio play and poetry, made us work extremely hard to portray distinct qualities for each character we played," said Michael Agrusso, another second-year MFA student.
In "Under Milkwood," the directors have taken the original poem and adapted it to a stage play.

IN THE PLAY Under Milk Wood, Dylan Thomas describes the people of Llareggub, Wales, in language that washes over the audience with the same peaceful force as the waves that break on the shore of his fictional port town.
A poet first and foremost, Thomas wrote his script to please the ear, not the eye--in fact, it was first performed as a radio piece in 1944--and while TheatreWorks' production is well-staged, the action distracts from what should be primarily a listening experience.
Some of the repeats could be cut, however: Polly Garter (Elizabeth Snyder) sings about her one true love about three times too often, and the show itself could stand to end after the first time the Rev. Eli Jenkins (Ron Evans) sings his sunset sermon.

Nevertheless, in relating the sexual dreams and fantasies and activities of the town and the world of men and women a touch of gothic intrudes.
The portrait Thomas paints of the town under Milk Wood is tainted by his own world-view, resentful of the Church, the lack of ambition and other provincialities.
There's an amazing amount of activity in the town, apart from its economy, lots of drinking, sexuality and folksong, but despite the evidence of bad-blood the community seems to thrive on love and an underlying generosity of heart that allows for the bounty that all life brings.

With the formation of the Boston Symphony orchestra in 1881, its founder, Henry Lee Higginson '63, saw to it that the new orchestra would continue the Harvard tradition by endowing six annual concerts in Cambridge (later expanded to ten).
Due to the size of the stage and to the unheated hallway which the players had to cross to reach the stage, this tradition was broken in the 1960's when the orchestra, under Erich Leinsdorf, found a loop-hole in Major Higginson's provision and withdrew to establish the "Cambridge Series" at Symphony Hall.
With subdued lighting and the guiding force of Bernstein, playing from memory at an upright piano on stage, a cigarette dangling from his mouth, the whole score was brought to life.

Completed only a month before Dylan Thomas died, Under Milk Wood is an inspired and irreverent account of life and love in a small coastal village in Wales one spring day.
Full of raucous energy and lyrical passion, it is the most complete expression of Thomas' unique perspective on the human condition.
Called “a play for voices” by the author himself, Under Milk Wood premiered in 1953 with Thomas and five American actors reading the parts and was preserved, almost by chance, in this remarkable recording.

It should be noted that, reintroduced to the woman he directed in Under Milkwood and who had co-narrated Spartacus, Hopkins did not remember her.
Catherine is sometimes referred to as a prima donna but, a hometown girl who enjoys rugby, boxing and a few beers, she has her head screwed on far too tightly to care about petty bickering.
