Under Rug Swept :: CD's :: Eternal Lyrics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Under Rug Swept finds Morissette in the producer's role, a position she seems more comfortable with at this stage than songwriter.
Swept's emotional flow is navigated by Morissette's vocal queues: her lower register accompanies confrontation and self-proclamation ("Narcissus"), the higher intimates vulnerability and reflection ("Utopia").
The snag is that, as with her previous two albums, Under Rug Swept is marred by unabridged stream-of-consciousness lyrics.

DVD-Audio Review: Alanis Morissette - ‘under rug swept’
‘under rug swept’, the 2002 release from Alanis Morissette, is the first of her albums to be remixed and released on the DVD-Audio format, although recording engineer Chris Fogel is now at work on her prior albums.
My favorite cut (and I suspect the favorite of others), is ‘hands clean’, which happens to sport the phrase “under rug swept” in its second chorus, thereby providing a Morissette a title for the album, although she continues to ignore upper and lower case distinctions when naming songs.
There is a wealth of material in that documentary, including interviews with Morrissette, live shots of concerts in which she performs some of the cuts from the disc, as well as shots of the rehearsals There is extensive video of the actual studio work on the album.

Alanis Morissette’s new record UNDER RUG SWEPT will be released on February 26 with her having decided on 11 tracks out of a written-30-and-recorded-25 selection.
UNDER RUG SWEPT ranges from the guitar-heavy "21 Things I Want In A Lover" and "Narcissus," to the subtle rhythmic grooves of "So Unsexy" and "You Owe Me Nothing In Return," to the expansive balladry of "Flinch" and "That Particular Time."
Digging deep below surfaces, Alanis arrives at a place on UNDER RUG SWEPT where raw truths are explored with the kind of fearless honesty and lack of censorship that has become a thread throughout all her songs.

Under Rug Swept marks her first self-produced effort and the result is one of the best CD's Morissette has released to date.
Like JLP, Under Rug Swept offers a variety of emotions throughout and each song seems to follow easily into the next, almost as if Morissette is writing about her continuing metaphysical journey filled with happiness and heartaches of love and life.
Why is "Under Rug Swept" the most relatable for me? Well, although I'm a huge fan of JLP and SFIJ, I find JLP "too angry" and SFIJ "too experimental and hard to sing-a-long to".

For the record, Exhibit C is lifted from "That Particular Time" off Alanis's new Under Rug Swept, making her the first singer-songwriter since Hasil Adkins to examine a failed relationship in terms of culinary technique.
Under Rug Swept is being sold and written about as Alanis's psychic excavation of a bad love affair dating back to when she was a teenager.
There's a lot of well-intentioned autobiography pouring out of Under Rug Swept, but I wish it were the work of Thora Birch's character in Ghost World instead—same level of confusion and venting, but with a sense of humor, some Don Knotts, and lots of sexy mischief-making thrown in.

Under Rug Swept finds Morissette in the producer's role, a position in which she seems more comfortable at this stage than as a songwriter.
Under Rug Swept has a more gentle feel to it than her previous work which if anything makes the songs better.
She sings some great lyrics such as, "We would stay and respond and expand and include and allow and forgive and enjoy and evolve and discern and inquire and accept and admit and divulge and open and reach out and speak up." Her voice rises and falls to the syllables, resulting in a Hippy-type sound.

Alanis Morissette - Under Rug Swept | Album Review @ Music-Critic.com : the source for music reviews, interviews, ...
Under Rug Swept follows a similar pattern to her first two, meaningful and courageous songs about personal subjects, performed with crazy, powerful vigour and penned with one eye on her diary and the other on the poetry books.
The flagship of Under Rug Swept is undoubtedly "21 Things I Want In A Lover," a rock-based poetic list of romantic criteria, but "Narcissus," which features her trademark spoken verse and wild chorus, comes close to it.
There are no obvious dud tracks on Under Rug Swept, it's all strong stuff and marks another landmark in a career that has gotten off to an explosive start.

 Under Rug Swept
Alanis Morissette, after having exorcised all the verbal diarrhea her "soul searching in India" (or something) catalyzed three years back, is back with a steadier, more accessible (although not as radio friendly as Jagged Little Pill), and less verbose album.
Musically, Under Rug Swept is standard Morissette fare - if you've heard Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, you will know what to expect.
Like this single, the rest of Under Rug Swept is an album that relies more on its lyrics to carry the music rather than glossy productions.

Alanis Morissette: Under Rug Swept (2002): Reviews
Under Rug Swept is Alanis Morissette in top form, exercising her God-given right to vent and sound beautiful doing so.
To Chris L: Alanis Morissette is the epitome of those "other artists out there." the fast that you think you can compare her to the typical overated musicians who all sound the same [avril, michelle branch, vanessa carlton--all of whom can be quite good at times] is ridiculous.
A couple of her phrasings could have been better handled, but overall, UNDER RUG SWEPT is a gorgeous exploration of the woman's psyche.

Steve Stevens Review: Alanis Morissette - Under Rug Swept
Where Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie was an apology to all her friends and family, Under is an apology to herself.
Where Supposed was a revelation of spirituality, Under is about making peace with her past.
While Alanis Morissette has great pop sensibility and arguably a compelling and competent writing style, she at times falls into some incredibly generic music, often in the middle of somewhat uniquely arranged songs; just listen to the intro to "So Unsexy".

 Alanis Morisette: Under Rug Swept
And so, Under Rug Swept becomes a signal as to whether the artist has panicked and once again reinvented herself, or decided to stay the course with a 'damn the critical torpedoes -- full speed ahead' attitude: in the sea of her career it seems to be 'steady as she goes'.
This piece is also representative of Morissette's characteristically unusual syntax where words are crammed together to fit the melody, and an irregular cadence, distracting to some, becomes her unique signature...but it works.
Ballard's previous role was merely to instill confidence in the former dance-music chanteuse as she underwent her remarkable transformation into a self-assured mega-star.

Rolling Stone : Under Rug Swept : Review
And it's not the only song on the album to suggest that her dream date would be Deepak Chopra.
The album title comes from lyrics in its lead single, "Hands Clean," an apparently matter-of-fact reminiscence of underage sex with a music-business mentor, an affair "under rug swept." As if to insist it's autobiographical, the song's video clip shows Morissette being groomed for her early stardom in Canada as a big-haired teeny-pop doll.
Under Rug Swept doesn't bother to get off the couch, and its final track, "Utopia," sounds like an eternal group-therapy session, where "we would share and listen and support and welcome." The paradox is that as Morissette talks herself into self-esteem and deep, shared love, she numbs her own wayward individuality.

Alanis Morissette's newest album is confirmation of her continually changing style and attitude, demonstrating a new side of the artist that is revealing, yet optimistically confident.
The title Under Rug Swept, though gleaned from a song lyric, implies an album of music that has been brushed aside.
Yet Morissette's dust bunnies are anything but - rather it feels as if she has taken an unexplored piece of her psyche out of the closet, polished it, and set it to music.

Given the midprice mess of her last studio effort, 'Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie', you have to wonder if the name of Alanis Morissette's latest is a ploy to make everyone forget the folly of four years ago.
In many instances it works too, with 'Under Rug Swept' a solid but never spectacular return to what she does best.
Granted, it begins in alarmingly mediocre fashion with opening song title '21 Things I Want in a Lover' the only plus point of a track which mixes sub-Sabbath riffing with Alanis' romantic mission statement.

Alanis' latest should not be swept 'Under Rug'
Alanis Morissette is not only making a comeback with her career, but she's doing something a little different this time around with her new album Under Rug Swept.
While the songs on this album still have the edge that made Morissette popular in the first place, she is not nearly as angry as she was in Jagged Little Pill.
This album is not Jagged Little Pill, and it's not likely that any album will be as good as her first, but at the same time Under Rug Swept contains many other qualities that make it different and an overall decent album.

Alanis Morissette : Under Rug Swept - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
The biggest move Alanis made was ditching Ballard, which has the unexpected result of bringing back the sound of Jagged Little Pill, a lush, dense layering of loops, guitars, keyboards, and vocals that makes her songs seem catchier than they are.
It was easier to call this trait charming on the diary confessions of Jagged, but by this point, the elaborate phrasing and rush of consonants is becoming a bit of a distraction, but the saving grace of Under Rug Swept is that it sounds good.
The music flows, the production doesn't overplay its hand, it's pleasingly melodic, tempering the extremities of Jagged Little Pill while retaining the character, and as such, it's easy to groove on the sound without listening to the words.

Virginmega.com - REVIEWS - Exclusive Review - Under Rug Swept
Her ear-demanding lyrics overflow and while still the recognizably angry and anguished soul of 1995's Jagged Little Pill, Morissette takes control here both literally as well as metaphorically; the Canadian songstress steps proficiently into the producer's seat, deftly surrounding her laundry lists of lyrics with crunchy guitars and captivating hooks.
Under Rug Swept heralds Morissette's trademark jumbled wordplay in its title and sets tone with the first track “21 Things I Want In A Lover,” both for the good and the bad.
Morissette has drawn fans as well as flak for filling her songs with sometimes baffling metaphors and stretched similes.
