Where Purple Rain was dramatic and serious, cut together with a killer soundtrack, Under the Cherry Moon is a lighthearted comedy, more in the tradition of the screwball comedies of the 1930s.
Under the Cherry Moon provides a few laughs - both of the intentional and unintentional variety, and has at least one good song on the soundtrack ("Kiss") - but ultimately, one's enjoyment of this film is going to rely heavily on just how much you like Prince.
Under the Cherry Moon is certainly not for all tastes, and the enjoyment of it will depend on a number of things.

"Under the Cherry Moon" isn't in the same class as "Top Hat," "She Done Him Wrong" or "Dinner at Eight," but Prince captures the essence of '30s comedies better than any of the directors (from Peter Bogdanovich to Woody Allen) who have slavishly imitated them.
"Under the Cherry Moon" is a fantasia of what might have happened if fls in classic Hollywood comedy hadn't been relegated to playing maids and bellhops.

dOc DVD Review: Under the Cherry Moon (1986)
Though some will challenge me, I feel Cherry's soundtrack is on a par with the legendary Purple platter and much more versatile, from the old-school r & b of Boys and Girls to the classy Sometimes It Snows In April and perhaps Prince's best single, the funkier than funk Kiss.
Image Transfer Review: Cherry’s letterboxed debut is a notably crisp transfer whose only fault is a lack of significant sharpness; there’s a faint ring of artificiality to the picture that keeps it from reaching its full potential.
Audio Transfer Review: It’s disappointing that Warner didn’t take the time to go back and give both Moon and Graffiti Bridge 5.1 makeovers like they did with the special edition of Purple Rain, especially since the soundtrack is so well recorded.
