Blackmore's Night: Under A Violet Moon (Edel Records, 1999.01.01)
Violet Moon shrouds a bevy of fan-faring trumpets, hurdy-gurdies and Blackmore's unusually anonymous plucking, while Night's vocals are as ethereal as double tracking will allow.
Moon celebrates an Arcadian vision of "the Knights and days of olde / The beggars and the thieves / Living in an enchanted wood" according to the title tune, blissfully ignorant that the Dark Ages were filled with senseless bloodshed and general intolerance.
We have bread and fishes and a jug of red wine To share on our journey with all of mankind." So I asked them to tell me their name and their race So I could remember each smile on their face "Our name, they mean nothing...

 Blackmore's Night
Like the two predecessors Shadow Of The Moon and Under A Violet Moon, Fires At Midnight also draws its fascination from enchanting lyrics and melodies and virtuoso guitar parts that serve the song in every instance.
The 1997 debut album Shadow Of The Moon stayed in the German album charts for 17 weeks and went gold in Japan.
After the release of the subsequent Under A Violet Moon (spring 1999), which went to no. 20 in Germany and to no. 12 in the Japanese Billboard charts, the band embarked on another tour, performing in castles, churches, theatres and opera houses.

BLACKMORES NIGHT: Shadow Of The Moon/Under A Violet Moon/Fires At Midnight
When Blackmore declared his intention to leave the world of Rock behind in favor of Renaissance folk music everyone thought that he would be back after a record or two, a recharging basically is what everyone thought.
Turns out this is what the man was meant to do and the fact that he found a partner that shared his vision and his home made the situation far too comfortable to leave and so now there is a third disc, "FIRES AT MIDNIGHT" released with no sign of a return to Hard Rock.
"UNDER A VIOLET MOON" is a head first dive into the deep end of Blackmore's view of Renaissance and Medieval folk as interpreted by an electric guitarist on acoustic instruments.

 Blackmore's Night at Musical Discoveries
The first album, Shadow of the Moon, was a wonderful but frightening experience to me. It was the very first time that I took the role of lead singer and I was very much still feeling my way.
On Under A Violet Moon a lot of those songs were written to spice up the stage set because if we only played songs from Shadow of the Moon the show would have been too calming.
The opening track, "Under A Violet Moon", is an upbeat sing-a-long, and I dare you not to tap your toes while listening.

Led and produced by ex-Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, Under a Violet Moon is a quantum leap forward from Blackmore's Night's uneven debut CD, Shadows of the Moon.
While both albums aim to create a fusion between renaissance and contemporary musical traditions, in Under a Violet Moon, Blackmore's Night creates a powerful musical statement which captures a renaissance mood without losing the power and drive of lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's heavy metal roots.
Flaws aside, Under a Violent Moon is one of the most successful fusion CDs of the year, one that captures a renaissance feel to provide a genuinely worthwhile musical experience.

Under a Violet Moon is the second album by Blackmore's Night, and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore had a very clear idea of what he wanted for the sophomore release by the Renaissance-oriented world and new age music outfit.
A variety of sonic textures are found on the album, but the faster numbers do dominate the proceedings and therefore fulfill Blackmore and Night's musical desires.
"Under a Violet Moon" is propelled by Blackmore's darkly rich acoustic guitar lines, Night's urgent vocals, and the driving handclaps and tambourine.

The rest range from the average cover of "Self Potrtait" to the unlistenable "March the Heroes Home." The guitar playing is restrained, presumably not to overshadow Candice's voice.
But Under A Violet Moon is still far better than the tripe we get fed day in and day out on the radio.
Overall there is too much of a soft sappyness to too many of the songs; the result being that this effort has more in common with Abba than Renaissance music, medieval music, or folk music.

BLACKMORE'S NIGHT Under a Violet Moon reviews and MP3
Sure there's a highlight or two like the gorgeous Blackmore solo instrumental Possom Goes To Prague (probably the best of the many that he's essayed with the group) and the violin work on Morning Star but generally I was unimpressed by the pop-inflected folk of this album.
Under A Violet Moon, Castles And Dreams, Avalon and Fool's Gold (probably my favourite of the lot) are all reminscent of the style of the first album, but never quite seem as inspired.
Another Blackmore instrumental Beyond The Sunset even sounds awfully like something from an easy listening collection, while his great playing at the beginning of Spanish Nights (I Remember It Well) is ruined by the song's aimless melody.

Who would have though that Ritchie Blackmore was capable and willing of creating music like this after hearing his work with rock giants Rainbow and Deep Purple.
Blackmore's Night is, as you may have guessed from the name, his solo project since a number of years back and this is their second album release.
Even though the album cover tells otherwise the music on "Under A Violet Moon" is some of the most exciting there is. Most of the tracks are composed by Blackmore with melodies taken from traditional medieval and renaissance music.

The first of these three fine albums, “Shadow of the Moon” is an esoteric piece filled with a variety of ballads, fine instrumentals, and all the atmosphere of a renaissance festival—the renaissance festivals are inappropriately named so; they should be called medieval festivals!
The next album, “Under a Violet Moon”, is a little more focused but still captures the medieval mood of the previous album.
