		ALBUQUERQUE - Mechanical clearing in the Rio Grande bosque to reduce fire danger is cutting into the food supply and shelter for birds, according to a new study.
		The study by the conservation group Hawks Aloft Inc. shows that areas recently cleared of underbrush around Albuquerque support about half as many birds as areas with naturally sparse grasses and scattered shrubs.
		In a mature cottonwood forest mechanically cleared of underbrush the previous fall, the group found 330 birds per 100 acres.
