Underwater archaeology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Underwater archaeology is the study of past human life, behaviours and cultures using the physical remains found in salt or fresh water or buried beneath water-logged sediment.
Shipwrecks (such as The Mary Rose) can also be important for archaeology because they can form a kind of accidental time capsule, preserving an assemblage of human artefacts at a moment in time i.e.
A working platform for underwater archaeology needs to be equipped to provide for specialist remote sensing equipment, analysis of archaeological results, support for activities being undertaken in the water, storage of supplies, facilities for conservation for any items recovered from the water, as well as accommodation for workers.

It is here that he discusses in more detail the work of the Undersea Research Group of Tailliez and Cousteau, who obviously did quite a bit of moonlighting, presumably with the blessing of the French Navy of which they were a unit.
It is a special science with its own rules and methods of research." He stresses one of the greatest tributes of a potential maritime archaeologist is to be a marine observer, and notes the importance of recording every detail of a wreck site, with the aim of dating the wrecks and learning their history: "...
Part archaeology, part natural science, it is predoninantly th thoughts and philosophy of Diole, who is a fine writer.

George Bass pioneered the field of nautical archaeology and modern techniques for the recovery of antiquities from their watery graves.

Simultaneously, he was also raising a family, running the largest undersea operation in the world, the conducting underwater research on several sites--all without any permanent support staff.

No attempt has been made to correlate the remaining undersea archaeological material with the historical record of the naval aspects of the invasion, which continued for months as hundreds of thousands of troops and their equipment came ashore to liberate Europe from Nazi tyranny.
Instead, the undersea archaeological record of the invasion has been subjected to decades of erosion, beach and shore clearing, and looting by sport divers, all of it virtually unchecked.
It is our greatest hope that this research might rekindle the interest of younger generations and students in America’s history, and that it will also honor the sacrifice made by the men who served and lost their lives defending freedom.
