Underwater - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Underwater, sometimes shortened as U/W, is a term describing the realm below the surface of water where the water exists in a natural feature (called a body of water) such as an ocean, sea, lake, pond, or river.
The solid surface location on the planet closest to the center of the orb is the Challenger Deep, located in the Mariana Trench at a depth of 10,924 m (35,838 ft) under the sea.
With increasing depth underwater, sunlight is absorbed, and the amount of visible light diminishes.

 MSN Encarta - Diving (underwater)
The earliest reference to underwater diving techniques occurs in the manuscripts of the Greek philosopher Aristotle, which refer to a diving bell used by forces of Alexander the Great to clear the harbor at Tyre in 332 bc.
Underwater, the pressure of the air trapped inside the barrel displaced any water that might enter.
Few advances in underwater diving equipment occurred from the 4th century bc to the 1600s, but since the 1600s inventors have devised several methods for working underwater.

The Truth about Underwater Burning Safety   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
During underwater burning operations, hydrogen is a constant presence created by the use of an electrical current, and the high temperature in the kerf (cut-line in the steel).
In the case of underwater cutting, hydrogen and oxygen are being liberated from the water because of the extremely high temperature of the steel being cut as well as the tip of the rod doing the cutting.
This type of underwater burning operation goes back to the salvage of the ships sunk in Pearl Harbor in 1941, and for every severe accident to a diver doing this type of burning operation, there are probably thousands of similar operations done safely and efficiently.
