noiseless typewriter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
For several decades, the development of a typewriter that was practically silent was the holy grail of the big typewriter manufacturers and independent inventors alike.
The true noiseless typewriter was the result of a collaboration between C.C. Colby of Quebec, and one of the most prolific of typewriter inventors, Wellington P Kidder.
The familiar clack clack of a typewriter results from the type bar striking the platen with force; Kidder's mechanism meant that, in theory, the type bar could be constrained to stop exactly at the platen, eliminating noise.

Science Museum | Typewriters - machines to supersede the pen | Introduction
The evolution of the typewriter is part of the ongoing history of the human need to communicate.
The development of the typewriter was the result of a desire both to speed up this process and to produce an aid for the blind in reading and writing.
During the 1880's many different types of typewriters were designed, but the one which developed the style we know today was the Underwood No.1, invented by F. Wagner and produced by the Wagner and Underwood Company.

...Early Typewriter History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
In the early days, typewriter manufacturers used the type-bar mechanism, in which the letters were raised in relief on a metal bar that struck the inked ribbon when the key was pressed.
Before 1893, all typewriters were `blind`; the type bars hit the underside of the platen (roller) and users couldn`t see what they were writing.
Typewriters became standardized as touch typing, which involved memorizing the keyboard, became a recognized commercial skill.

The silver rod running along the top of the typewriter runs from the chrome return lever on the left to a cam on the right, which rotates and pushes down on another rod which is connected to the computer "return" key hidden beneath the console.
All the typewriter keys were resurfaced in vinyl so that they would match and so that they would be correctly labeled.

A prize machine from the Science Museum's collection, the Underwood typewriter was the forerunner to the modern typewriter, with its mechanics and appearance being almost identical to those seen today.
The machine was a success and the company had to move twice to expand, changing its name in the process from the Wagner Typewriter Company to the Underwood Typewriter Company.
Most manufactures recognised that they could not better the Underwood and instead set about adapting it so that they could manufacture it under their name.

The Underwood 5, the machine that would dominate the market for three decades, appeared in 1901 and was a tremendous success, which is underlined by the fact the machine presented here was built in 1915, with a serial number in the 800,000s.
Millions more were to follow, making the Underwood 5 one of the most important but least valued typewriters around.
