Underworld, from first time director Len Wiseman, is an example of a vampire movie for the new century - stylish, gothic, gory, and loud.
The plot may not be irrelevant (in fact, this movie requires too much exposition to clarify the situation), but character development is. And, as a bonus, not only do we have vampires, but werewolves as well.

Underworld is a sleek, novel, and chic action movie about a millennium old war between Vampires and Werewolves.
Underworld is a good piece of work with an interesting storyline, capable supporting cast, with the bulk of the action occurring in one principal location and remarkable makeup and special effects.
This time the effects blended into the picture and didn't overshadow the characters or scenes for which they were set to enhance nor did they take on an identity of their own, which is another credit for this film.

Underworld review (2003) Kate Beckinsale - Qwipster's Movie Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Underworld imagines a world where humans, vampires, and werewolves (called Lycans here) co-exist, with the latter two in a war against each other in the underbelly of the cities they inhabit.
Underworld is such a tedious watch, not only because it is inherently superficial in everything it does, but it also is one of the more repetitive films to cover this oft-explored territory.
I'm all for cool, but this cool is so un-cool because it's passé, having been done to death by The Matrix and its myriad of clones, as well as The Crow, Buffy and Blade, to name but a few that have followed the same path.

 Underworld (2003): Reviews
It is the perfectly cast Beckinsale who lifts Underworld out and away from the film’s many moments of silly gravitas and steers it into a truly interesting take on the whole vampires 'n' werewolves genre.
Alas, as is often the case with lower-end genre movies, the story cooked up by Wiseman and his friends, actor Kevin Grevioux and the film's screenwriter, Danny McBride, is decidedly less important than the look of the film and its influences.
Beautiful in its dark, contrasting blues and fls, Underworld is nonetheless a remarkably humorless movie, and not even the adroitly hammy Bill Nighy, as the vampire king, can leaven the overwrought seriousness of it all.

"Underworld" was somewhat of an odd experience for me in that I kept picking up on its screenplay flaws, but remained engrossed nonetheless.
Though it sometimes feels as if it's four hours long, "Underworld" has going for it an intriguing fantasy premise, an eventful plot and a look that is diverting, if finally a bit monotonous.

It should be obvious to any free-thinking person that none of the ideas present in Underworld are original, but what this film does well is take ideas that were established in the past and build on them more.
The most refreshing aspect of this movie is the story, which surprisingly has many layers and puts a totally fresh new spin on the vampire/werewolf stories.
This is not a movie for the squeamish, nor is it a movie for those who like to be able to NOT concentrate on the plot.

Underworld adds a new spin to the vampire and werewolf myths with a modern mix of Romeo and Juliet and Blade.

Underworld is intriguing and an interesting twist on tales we have heard our whole lives and worth the watch, but don't expect anything more than what you saw in Blade and Blade II.

Underworld starts out with a chaotic mess of an action sequence that seems to go on forever.
The entire movie is filmed in a metallic monochrome that makes things appear depressingly dreary.
Still, the movie looks sufficiently offbeat to be interesting, although the muted colors and lack of anything resembling bright light becomes a little wearisome before the proceedings are over.
