Unfaithful (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unfaithful is a 2002 movie directed by Adrian Lyne.
The story centers on Constance "Connie"/"Con" (Diane Lane) and Edward "Ed" Sumner (Richard Gere) as a couple living in the New York City suburbs whose marriage goes dangerously awry when she indulges in an adulterous fling.
To prepare for the initial love scene between Paul and Connie, director Adrian Lyne had Diane Lane watch the film Aimée and Jaguar.

Film Reviews on CLUAS - Unfaithful
She represents an inspired piece of casting - Lane is gorgeous in much the same way as Helen Hunt, these ladies both glow on screen but unconsciously convey emotional depth coloured by a sense of loss and yearning.
Midway through “Unfaithful” there is loads of sex - they’re at it in the mens’ room, in the cinema, in the hallway, and the odd piece of dialogue gets thrown in during afterglow moments.
However before we (or Connie) get too hung up on the joys of illicit sex the warning signals are writ large - one of Constance’s friends tells her in the most priggish way that she herself had an affair and that it was the one thing in her life she regretted.

The film tells the story of a happily married couple well into the second decade of their marriage and wrapped in routine emotional stagnancy.

 The Popkorn Junkie :: Unfaithful
One of the primary flaws of the film was casting Olivier Martinez--a less than terrific actor, whose accent becomes annoying at times, as he tries to play Don Juan in front of Lane.
The best part of the film is by far Diane Lane who brilliantly shows us a woman who is battling the desire to have an affair with a much younger man while at the same time agonizing over what she knows deep down is a huge mistake.
While the film has some unintentional funny scenes and laughable dialog, it never-the-less held me wanting to know what would happen in the end.

This is what we in the Theater refer to as Drama As Art, meaning that the plot is less important than the impact that the various plot points have on the characters, creating more and more and more drama as the story unfolds.
Based on her choice(s), the drama begins to build to a point when, at the end of the film, the DRAMA is the star, not Geer and Lane.

 Unfaithful: triple j film reviews
Unfaithful is a loose remake of Lyne's favourite film, The Unfaithful Wife (1969) directed by famed French New Wave co-founder Claude Chabrol.
It must be said that the first half of Unfaithful blitzes; it is engrossing and its story and setting expertly woven together.
As in all of Lyne's films, the seduction is on for not only the protagonist (in this case Connie), but the audience as well.

Unfaithful doesn't push the melodrama the way "Attraction" did, but it lingers in the mind as much.
Though it is difficult to take Unfaithful as seriously as it takes itself, on its own terms it's quite well done.
Despite the Gallic source material, what we truly have in Unfaithful is a tasteful, adult-contemporary ''Fatal Attraction'' redux, right down to the mister's Soho address and the happy family tucked away in the New York hinterlands.

Unfaithful has a poetic, dream-like look about it, courtesy of DPH Peter Biziou, and boasts a trio of powerhouse performances, especially from Lane.
Her portrayal of Connie's conflicting emotions, which run from unrestrained arousal to intense guilt and self-loathing, and the gamut in between, is remarkable, fully capturing the dizzying array of sensations one must go through in circumstances such as those.
Basically, Unfaithful is a one-theme score, but such is its construction and exquisite, intelligent orchestration, it never feels repetitive or long-winded.

 Unfaithful film review
Unfaithful is the latest erotic thriller from director Adrian Lyne, who has devoted himself to exploring the devastating effects wreaked by sexual obsession, with such films as Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal and 9 ½ Weeks.
Unfaithful is a glossy morality tale woven around the adulterous affair of a beautiful woman whose perfect life and perfect marriage prove no match for the irresistible carnal urges triggered by a handsome young stranger.
It's a shame then, that Unfaithful felt this was insufficient to sustain the drama and resorted to more flagrant actions, shifting the emphasis to that of a conventional thriller.

This isn't the sort of film that would normally appeal to me and when I watched it I half expected to give up half way through, what unfolds though is a genuinely fascinating film about relationships and how we view them.
The film's plot has been mentioned here by many of the other reviewers so I won't rehash it again, but I'll just comment that I really liked the way that Constance wasn't given any excuses to run into the arms of her lover.
The use of facial expressions to reveal the characters feelings are wonderful and there are several scenes in the film which use these to ultimate effect; Constance's train journey home after her first time with her lover and the scene in the bathroom with her husband are prime examples.

His short story Emma Zunz was turned into a film (under the name of Días de odio, which in English became Days of Wrath) in 1954 by Argentine director Leopoldo Torre Nilsson.

The nice thing about the trailer for this film is that so far they have only presented the first third of the story...let's hope, as far as the thriller aspect goes they leave it at that without ruining it for the audience.
Unfaithful has a few moment where you are pretty much pummelled with obviousness though there are other moments, mostly due to Diane Lane, that are done with no words, through only actions, through a look of the eyes, a brush of hands etc. that really make some of the scenes work.
The finest moment in the film is the one that has been building for so long in the movie...the two leading men meeting.

 Unfaithful
By any reasonable standard, which is to say in a slightly less diseased moviegoing culture, these words would be more than enough to consign Unfaithful to the dust-heap of late spring while one hurries off to catch the sensational Y Tu Mamá También once more before it leaves the plexes.
But, rather than ignoring the film's technical and contextual dimensions through my focus on its gender politics, I believe I am accurately receiving a film that has suppressed any creativity, texture, or discernible artistic vitality in order to foreground its own narrative "daring" in telling the story of a woman who wanted it all.
The point is that Unfaithful has only its moral provocations to offer us as an audience, and I for one found the film more provoking than its subject matter.

Similarly, scenes that had a distinctly Hitchcockian flavour in Chabrol’s original film (Hitchcock was an acknowledged influence) are rendered unintentionally laughable here, despite being identical to their source.
Ultimately, the film fails to make the same point that the original does — the fact that it takes a violent act to resuscitate the marriage — and therefore loses much of its impact.
In short, Unfaithful is watchable and well acted, though it may suffer from the inability to make the same points as effectively as the original film.

Yes, it's a Lyne film with an upscale American couple rocked by infidelity, but this isn't 'Fatal Attraction 2'.
Unlike the cheap shock tactics of its predecessor, it proves a surprisingly grown up affair, exploring the panoply of emotions unleashed by sex outside an 11-year marriage.
Like Chabrol's La Femme Infidèle, on which it's based, the film eventually slides into teasing thriller mode, and though it lacks the original's astringent concentration, the range of sympathies is definitely broader here as secrets on both sides lock the couple in a private hell.
