Unfinished Tales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unfinished Tales (full title Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth) is a collection of stories by J.
Unlike The Silmarillion, for which the narrative fragments were modified to connect into a consistent and coherent work, the Unfinished Tales are presented as Tolkien left them, with little more than names changed (the author having had a confusing habit of trying out different names for a character while writing a draft).
Versions of such tales including the origins of Gandalf and the Istari (Wizards), the death of Isildur and the loss of the One Ring in the Gladden Fields, and the founding of the kingdom of Rohan help expand knowledge about Middle-earth.

''Unfinished Tales'' (full title ''Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth'') is a collection of stories by J. Tolkien that were never completed during his lifetime, but were edited by his son Christopher Tolkien and published in 1980.
This contributed to "unfinished symphonies" receiving in the public opinion an exceptional stature, and they were sought after everywere, virtually no composer escaping the fuss made over unfinished or rejected youth works, or ultimate symphonies they were unable to complete, e.g.:
The book is a somewhat sordid tale of the mixing of high and low social classes, and is considered to be some of the best American writing ever produced.

All these questions and many more are addressed in the many unfinished tales that are to be found in this book: tales from all three of the ages of Middle-earth; from heroes such as Tuor and Turin in the First Age, to Bilbo and Gandalf in the Third.
Almost every tale is told in a different style, but each is satisfying, up to the point where it breaks off: then frustration and speculation set in, but also a deep appreciation for the scope and grandeur of Middle-earth and the man who created it.

In the first text presented in Unfinished Tales, dated tentatively by Christopher Tolkien to 1954, the arrival of the wizards to the great havens is given.
All of the above information taken from the Unfinished Tales points to the arrival in Middle-earth around 1050 years after the beggining of the third age, since they arrived approximately at the same time as the other wizards (and this date is given in Appendix B to Return of the King).
Notes that were considered uninterpretable during the writing of Unfinished Tales (as is stated in both books)were finally deciphered by Christopher Tolkien.

The inclusion of the unpublished narratives and sketc hes of narrative on this subject therefore entails at once the acceptance of the history not as a fixed, independently-existing reality which the author "reports" (in his "persona" as translator and redactor), but as a growing and shifting conception in h is mind.
Like the tale of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin it goes back to the very beginnings, and is extant in an early prose narrative (one of the "Lost Tales") and in a long, unfinished poem in alliterative verse.
It is said in the Tale of Years given in Appendix B to The Lord of the Rings: "Those were the dark years for Men of Middle-earth, but the years of the glory of Numenor.

Many of the passages in Unfinished Tales and the appendices to Return of the King assume that you are already familiar with the basic story of The Lord of the Rings –; even though they are earlier stories, chronologically.
In a similar way, Unfinished Tales contains more detailed versions of the story of Tuor, and the story of the alliance between Gondor and Rohan, than are contained in The Silmarillion or in the appendix to The Return of the King.
For example, in Unfinished Tales there is a short piece that describes the Nazgûl's hunt for the Ring, including when they realized Saruman had double-crossed them and how they reached the Shire.

 3.1. Unfinished Tales
"Unfinished Tales" contains four chapters which are of considerable assistance which can provide added insights to some of the matters surrounding the Ring - The History of Galadriel and Celeborn, The Disaster of Gladden Fields, The Quest of Erebor and The Hunt for the Ring.
Whereas the tale of Isildur that appears in The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion is brief, the fragment in Unfinished Tales fleshes out the detail, and allows us to understand the tragedy of Isildur.
However, it is not appropriate for this essay to gather together, for example, the references to the way in which the idea of Isildur developed as the first person apart from Sauron to hold the Ring, and lose it.

All in all the Unfinished tales does make for good reading particularly for those who have read the Silmarilion before this as it widens the scope of just how widespread the imagination of JRR Tolkien really was.
Unfinished Tales simply fills in the gaps and elaborates on aspects of Middle Earth for those who wish to examine the addictive world that Tolkein created.
For those of you who just see the Lord of the Rings as a nice story and don't care about the subtle nuances of the tale, don't bother reading this, you'll just be let down.
