  Truth and Unfit for Command
John O'Neill and Jerome Corsi's Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry is divided into two parts, each with five chapters.
O'Neill is the author of Part I, "John Kerry in Vietnam." Corsi appears to have written Part II, "Antiwar Protester," as well as the conclusion, chapter 10, "Unfit for Command." This review is a detailed rebuttal/debunking of Part I followed by a few comments on Part II.
Indeed, the truth is that a recent statement by Adrian Lonsdale, Kerry's base commander at An Thoi, and the relevant operations order, authored by him and specific to his command, demonstrate that Kerry's friend Don Droz wrote the spot report for the mission that led to Kerry's Silver Star.

 UNFIT FOR COMMAND CHAPTER 5
Commander Elliott notes that the tone and substance of Kerry’s “reports” are captured quite succinctly in Churchill’s quote, “I expect history to treat me kindly since I wrote it.”
Commander George Elliott, who wrote up the initial draft of Kerry’s Silver Star citation, confirms that neither he nor anyone else in the Silver Star process that he knows realized before 1996 that Kerry was facing a single, wounded young Viet Cong fleeing in a loincloth.
Commander Elliott indicates that a Silver Star recommendation would not have been made by him had he been aware of the actual facts.

 Kerry and unfit for command
Now with the book "Unfit for Command" (written by John O'Neill and Jerome Corsi and supported by inputs from more than 60 honorable Swift Boat Veterans), it is clear that several of Kerry's combat awards were based on betrayal and deception as were his attacks against his fellow soldiers during the Vietnam War.
My conclusion from reading "Unfit for Command" is that Kerry still owes the U.S. taxpayer 243 days of Vietnam service based on factual misrepresentations made in his award submissions.
According to "Unfit for Command," two of John Kerry's Purple Heart awards were based on self-inflicted wounds and were not the result of hostile fire of any kind.

Swift Boat Veterans for Truth - SourceWatch
Their primary projects have been: their website (http://www.swiftvets.com), the book Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry (released by the conservative Regnery Publishing), and a series of television advertisements (http://swift1.he.net/~swiftvet/index.php?topic=Ads) challenging John Kerry's military record and activism against the Vietnam War.
Commander George Elliott—who praised Kerry's conduct during the Vietnam War—provided an affidavit criticizing Kerry for being awarded a Silver Star.
The claim to objectivity by the "Unfit for Command" book also appeared to be undermined by the revelation that Jerome Corsi (also known as Jerry Corsi), listed as co-author (O'Neill claims Corsi acted as “simply an editor”), regularly posted comments to a conservative website portraying Muslims and Catholics as pedophiles.

 UNFIT FOR COMMAND CHAPTER 6
The contention was that American military policy in Vietnam necessarily resulted in the commission of war crimes, that the atrocities committed were commonplace occurrences, and that military commanders condoned these war crimes as a necessary result of the orders they had issued.
The VVAW had no intention of pointing the finger at the soldiers themselves; the goal was to indict the United States military, all the way up the chain of command to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and, ultimately, to President Nixon.
In 1971–72, for almost eighteen months, he stood before the television audiences and claimed that the five hundred thousand men and women in Vietnam, and in combat, were all villains— there were no heroes.

O’Neill, a lawyer and swift boat veteran, and Corsi, an expert on Vietnam antiwar movements, argue that Kerry misrepresented his wartime exploits and is therefore incompetent to serve as commander in chief.
Buttressed by interviews with Navy veterans who patrolled Vietnam’s waters, some along with Kerry, the book claims he exaggerated minor injuries, self-inflicted others, wrote fictitious diary entries and filed "phony" reports of his heroism under fire—all in a calculated quest to secure career-enhancing combat medals.

Due to the timing of its publication, Unfit for Command could be dismissed as the sort of controversial, loaded book typical in a presidential election year: Either courageous and necessary, or untruthful and malicious, depending on one's political point of view.
And yet for all the apparent strengths of its case, the book fails to adequately account for the support of the men who actually served under Kerry's command in the line of fire and who, one would assume, witnessed his mettle firsthand.
In this polarized political climate, Unfit for Command probably won't change many opinions.
