  Ungava - LoveToKnow 1911
Along Hudson Bay shore there is a strip of similar rocks, and a long row of small islands of the same age, with great sheets of trap or diabase forming the tops of the hills.
There is evidence that Ungava, like the rest of Labrador, has risen several hundred feet since the Ice Age, marine beaches being found up to 700 ft. on the Hudson Bay side; and it is interesting to find seals like those of the adjoining seacoasts in the Seal Lakes too m.
Owing to its northerly position a large part of Ungava is treeless, and belongs to the barren grounds where caribou roam and feed on the socalled caribou moss, a greyish lichen.

Ungava Bay - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ungava Bay is a large bay in northeastern Canada separating Nunavik (far northern Québec) from Baffin Island.
Ungava Bay is surrounded by numerous Inuit villages, the largest of which is Kuujjuaq at the mouth of the Koksoak River.
Attempts have been made to develop tidal power in the bay, but this is made difficult by the harsh climate and the fact that the bay is ice-free for only a small part of the year.

James, Hudson and Ungava bays are summering areas for stocks of beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) (Sergeant and Brodie, 1975; Finley et al., 1982; Smith and Hammill, 1986; Richard et al., 1990).
In Ungava Bay, beluga whales were seen on four of five flying days in July, with a maximum daily count of 20 individuals in one sighting, and on three of six flying days in August, with 20 individuals in two sightings on the best day (Table 3).
Ungava Bay communities capture beluga whales in most years, but often outside the bay and outside the season when they inhabit their summer grounds.

The estimated number of breeding pairs on the Ungava Peninsula (regions 1,2, and 3) in 2003 (156,937 pairs) was similar to the 2002 estimate of 164,840 pairs (P = 0.653) (Table 2, Figure 2).
From 1993-2000, the estimated density of breeding pairs was similar in the Hudson and Ungava Bay coastal zones (Figure 3), although density along Hudson Bay tended to be slightly higher.
In 2003, the estimated density of breeding pairs was essentially unchanged along the Hudson Bay coast and decreased 13% on the Ungava Bay coast compared to 2002 (Figure 3).

We will plan our launches into the bay around slack water (a short window of time when the tide is neither coming in nor going out), and our landfalls at high tide -- we don't want the sea to join us in the tents in the middle of the night.
The Spring 1988 edition of CHE-MUN reprinted the whole article and it provides a true glimpse of the mindset of the victors of WWII and that the generation of our parents and grandparents were prone to fits of lunacy.
Ungava is blessed with them, and fortunately for us, a lot of them head up the rivers draining into it to spawn, which is the only reason why we've brought along a fisherman (Peter Brewster) and his Gilley (Peter Scott).

Among the first Inuit in Canada to establish permanent contacts with Europeans, the Ungava were also the first to take charge of the administration and management of their development through INUIT CO-OPERATIVES and the JAMES BAY AGREEMENT; they also became renowned for the fine quality and abundance of their contemporary art (see INUIT ART).

The southern part of Ungava Bay, especially the Whale River and Mucolic River estuaries, is a very important area for whales in the summer.
The size of the population is made evident by the fact that in the early 1900s the beluga of southern Ungava Bay were commercially harvested for their oil by the Hudson Bay Company.
Ungava Bay has a tidal range that can exceed 10 meters, thus exposing large flats and shallow water areas in the estuaries at low tide.

The Bay of Fundy tides have long been considered the highest in the world, although this claim has been challenged by evidence from Ungava Bay.
The Fundy tides are responsible for: the vertical mixing of water in the bay, resulting in high productivity and low surface-water temperatures; effective mixing of sea water and fresh water in the estuaries of the bay; the exposure of large intertidal zones; and high turbidity at the head of the Bay.

The time that the Ungava Bay traveling court now spends in Salluit could be devoted to Kangiqsualujjjuaq, a community with a large backlog of court cases.
Lavergne said Salluit was historically served by Ungava Bay's traveling court solely because the court didn't visit Puvirnituq for many years, and it was easier to travel to Salluit from Kuujjuaq than Kuujjuaraapik.
The decision to take Salluit out of the Ungava Bay circuit may also be related to the decision not to stay the night in that community.

The Ungava Bay Atlantic salmon inhabit rivers in a northern land and climate believed to be marginally suitable for their survival.
The arctic waters of the bay and the strait are cold, often choked with sea ice, and the summer growing season is short.
The salmon appear to have uniquely adapted to these rigorous conditions of the Ungava by developing specie strains that can survive winters in the river and the estuary, many of which feed and rejuvenate in the spring and summer possibly in preparation for the fall spawning.
