  Perissodactyla - Odd-toed ungulates
The Tapiridae - the closest family to the ancestral perissodactyl condition - possess four toes on the forefeet (digit V is used on wet or marshy ground) and three on the hind.
Perissodactyls are truly unguligrade, with the heel, sole, and digits of the foot never touching the ground.
The ulna and fibula (bones in the forearm and lower leg) are reduced, simplifying the wrist/ankle joint considerably.

 1. General Features of the Foot   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Finally, there is a group of animals which rise even higher on their limbs and in fact rest on the horny covering of the terminal phalanx, the horny covering being the hoof.
If we take the foot as that part on which a subject rests we shall recognise different things as a foot in animals with a different method of progression.
For a plantigrade animal (bear, man) the foot will be that part of the limb distal to the radius/ulna and tibia/fibula: for digitigrades (cats, dogs) the limb distal to the metacarpals and metatarsals: for unguligrades (horse, ruminant and pig) the part of the limb enclosed in the weight-bearing hoof or hoofs.

Ultimate modification of the limb structure for cursorial movement is found in the ungulates, especially those inhabiting the open plains and grasslands.
These animals are called unguligrade and the phalanges are elevated such that only the hooves contact the ground.

Notice the foot postures of these mammals and the changes in proportion to the distal parts of their limbs.
By comparing the limbs of PLANTIGRADE (burrower), DIGITIGRADE (dog), and UNGULIGRADE mammals (horse), one can see that the increase in limb length derives mainly from an elongation of the distal part of the limb.
This keeps the length of the in-lever as short as possible relative to the length of the out-lever and maximizes velocity as well as increases stride.

They are unguligrade, referring to walking on the very tip of the toes, giving them what some people think is a backwards-facing knee--actually the heel, far up the leg.
The knee is much higher and almost concealed.
