The village, the area at Main Street (Route 520) and Holmdel Road (Route 4), is named after the Holmes family, owner of most of the land in the area around the 1830s, according to the Images of America Holmdel and Pleasant Valley book by township resident Gerald V. Ceres.
"Holmdel" began showing up in local records in the early 1830s, when it was chosen as the name of the new post office, according to the Ceres book.
Before that, the village area was known as Bray's Meeting House (for the Baptist church) and later as Academy (for the school there).
