Union is the county seat of Franklin County, the third largest county in the State of Missouri.
The town was established to serve as the seat and its name "Union" was supposedly chosen to signify a coming together after dissention of the county over the moving of the county seat from Newpert.
Union continued to grow at a moderate rate until 1887 when it experienced a "boom" caused by the completion of the St. Louis, Kansas City and Colorado Railroad to this point.

On July 18, 1861, Union General Irvin McDowell issued General Order No. 18, defining the authority of the provost marshal in the Army of Northeast Virginia, as the troops moved southward on campaign.
It was not uncommon for the law to be suspended in many cases and for the provost marshal, mostly independent of any real supervision, to dispense with the rules of civil procedure.

KANSAS CITY, MO -- The American Civil Liberties Union filed court papers today on behalf of a woman deemed "exceptionally" qualified to become a foster mother whose application was denied because she is a lesbian.
The ACLU brought this lawsuit against the Missouri Department of Social Services on behalf of Lisa Johnston, a 40-year-old graduate of the University of Kansas who holds a degree in Human Development and Family with a special emphasis on child development.
Under Missouri law, every potential foster parent is already required to undergo strict screening before being qualified to foster parent.
