This tornado caused $3.3 million in property damage ($800,000 in Vernon County and $2.5 million in Richland County) and $268,900 in crop damage ($193,900 in Vernon County and $75,000 in Richland County).
Vernon County was declared a federal disaster area.
A death total of 17 is usually given for this tornado, but according to the History of Vernon County at least 13 people were killed in Viroqua and as many as 12 others may have died later from injuries.

The southwest corner of the Town of Vernon was part of the community generally known as Caldwell's Prairie, which also encompassed areas in the vicinity of the Village of Mukwonago.
If you have lived in the Town of Vernon for a long time, you may know it as "Norris Farm." If you are newer to the area, you may know it as the Norris School or Norris Adolescent Center.

The famous trek of Jean Nicolet down the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers opened the area to fur trappers and traders and brought with it diseases such as small pox and measles that decimated the Native American people.

In early October, 1862, the Union camp at New Madrid bend, which consisted of 150 men, was attacked just before dawn by 300 Confederate Cavalry.
