I too rely on the TTC and won’t be able to get to work until this work stoppage is somehow resolved.  Let’s hope that for everyone’s sake that TTC managment & union can somehow foster some kind of working relationship to get the people back on the buses, streetcars, and subways.
Yes, unions have a place, but not in a state-run monopoly.  The general public doesn’t deserve to be held hostage to the interests of whoever is behind today’s action.

 Eye Weekly - News - September 14, 2006
TTC Transit Stuff, as it is named with nearly postmodern utilitarianism, is the first formal TTC merchandising effort in many years.
From a transit-advocacy standpoint, it seemed like a positive sign that the TTC had caught on to the stylish and geeky civic cachet of its brand and was extending its marketing efforts more broadly to a community that has been expressing a mostly unrequited transit love.
The TTC could benefit by embracing their rider relationship in productive ways that involve listening and encouraging, rather than haphazardly outsourcing their image and exacting humourless limits over the efforts of those who, through both taxpaying and cultural identity, are the system's true owners.

Roschlau sees the TTC's experiences in the early part of the decade as proof that it has already survived "the death spiral." He points out that it is far leaner and more efficient today than in the early '90s.
Roschlau calls Gunn "a godsend to the TTC" and Rodo seems in awe of the man. Under Gunn's regime, the TTC downsized by 1,200 employees, increased its fare recovery rate from roughly 60 to 80 per cent and restructured an unwieldy organizational hierarchy.
Money pressures are one reason TTC union and management leaders are promoting new marketing initiatives, such as the Smog Buster pass, which gives drivers a break on their auto insurance rates in the hope they'll use public transit.

As Union Station became the hub of a large and growing commuter train network known as GO Transit, the mezzanine level at the TTC's Union station was expanded and reconfigured to handle the additional loads, and even to allow people not taking the TTC to cross through it to the Royal Bank Centre.
If the TTC had gone this route, trains to Keele at St. George and Woodbine at Bay would be on the same level, and passengers wouldn’t have to wait between levels in order to be sure to catch the first train to their destination.
This situation did not remain, however, as declining ridership and the cost of serving the low-density suburbs pushed the TTC into deficit, but even as the City was providing subsidy for the construction of the University subway, there was no pressure to move the Bloor line back onto Queen.

 COMMISSION REPORT MACRO
The existing TTC Union Subway Station concourse and platform (see attached Drawing No. 1) have limited capacity to carry highly concentrated passenger demands, which frequently exceed the practical and safe capacity of stairs, escalators and the platform during AM and PM peak periods and following the end of major events.
In response to these pressures, TTC staff identified the need to expand the capacity of the existing station, both at the platform and concourse levels and to address layout and functional issues.
TTC staff have undertaken a wide range of consultation initiatives for the project, including discussions with GO Transit and City of Toronto, presentations to affected property owners and special interest groups and a Public Open House, as described below.

Spacing Wire • understanding the urban landscape » TTC Union Threatens Wildcat Strike (Updated)
Bob Kinnear, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 hasn’t confirmed whether a strike will take place, but has indicated that the union is giving it serious consideration in response to concerns raised about the safety of front-line TTC personnel, especially in the area of fare disputes with passengers.
The problem is that the TTC Commissioners want staff to be everyone’s friend and to exercise “discretion” in enforcing the fare rules, but then turn around and wring their hands about lost farebox revenue.
To stave off a wildcat strike, the union is asking for management to commit to solid time frames for the installation of security cameras and other measures to protect the safety of bus and streetcar drivers.
