Latest US Airways Negotiation/ Bankruptcy News - HERE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
US Airways, the nation's seventh largest airline, has said that it may seek bankruptcy protection by Sept. 15, when it is required to make $130 million in payments to two union pension funds, if employees have not accepted wage and benefits cuts as part of a $1.5 billion cost restructuring.
Union leaders are on call this weekend to review any tentative agreement and decide if it should be sent to all pilots for a ratification vote.
Union leaders representing pilots in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia voted to block the proposal from being presented to the union's 3,000 pilots for a vote.

 US Airways Cuts Union Deal
On Friday, US Airways' management planed to file a motion under section 1113(e) of the bankruptcy code that would allow it to temporarily impose work rules and new pay scales on all employees.
Under the 1113(e) filing, US Airways management seeks to cut pilot base pay rates by 23% and freeze them in place, replace current pension plan contributions with a 10% employer contribution and change a variety of work rules, allowing the airline to fly smaller planes flown by cheaper pilots.
The pilots union has been at odds with itself, with four local members blocking a general vote on a wage concessions package that would have kept US Airways out of bankruptcy.

US Airways' pilots union OKs contract - and 18% pay cut
ARLINGTON, Va. - US Airways' pilots union ratified a new labor contract Thursday that the airline says is a critical step to a successful emergence from bankruptcy, with pilots accepting an 18 percent pay cut on average and other changes that will cut costs by $300 million a year.
The ratification means that US Airways pilots will not face temporary pay cuts of 21 percent that a bankruptcy judge imposed last week on unions that have not agreed to new, long-term contracts.
The union estimates that pilots have now collectively forgone $7 billion in wages and benefits, including concessions made in the first bankruptcy in 2002 and up through 2009.

There aren't many unions in Charlotte so if these folks wind up needing a paycheck, they might actually have to get paid based on merit and performance instead of tenure at a job where half the on duty hours can't be spent reading a newspaper.
Unions are not the root of their problem, but can be part of the solution if management would truly work in unison with it’s employees instead of merely dictating policy and term.

After the vote Tuesday night the union and US Airways continued negotiations to hammer out an agreement over whether the more drastic cuts could be held off until Oct. 21, when the pilots' votes will be tallied.
