The Baptists were the first denomination of British Christians to undertake in a systematic way that work of missions to the heathen, which became so prominent a feature in the religious activity of the 19th century.
Among the Baptist leaders gained from Congregationalism as a result of the awakening was Isaac Backus (1724-1806), who became the New England champion in the cause of religious liberty and equality, and the historian of his denomination.
Baptists lost favor by threatening to appeal to England for a redress of their grievances at the very time when resistance to English oppression was being determined upon.

The term "Union Hill" first occurs in 1817-- probably referring to the combination of several hills that were joined by fill and grading over the years.
Union Hill's building lots were laid off in 1805, but it wasn't until 1845 that small tradesmen began to build in earnest along the cobblestone streets (many of which still exist today).

The Norwegian Baptist Union (NBU) (Det Norske Baptistsamfunn) is a national organization of Baptists in Norway for promoting cooperation in missions, benevolence, and education; also called the Baptist Union of Norway.
The first Baptist church in Norway was founded at Skien in 1862 by Frederick Ludvig Rymker, a former Danish sailor turned missionary.
Baptists of Norway established a theological seminary in 1910, a youth association in 1922, and a high school in 1958.

"Preparing Baptist students for the challenges that they face in their church has been a great challenge for us as faculty." A key component of the Duke Divinity School's recruitment effort has been the Baptist House of Studies program, which was organized in 1988.
Duke Divinity School is one of 11 schools supported by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, an organization that sprang up as an alternative to the Southern Baptist Convention, said Ray Allen, recently retired pastor of Blacksburg (Va.) The first Baptist church in Boston was established in 1665, and the organization of the first one in Maine, then part of Massachusetts, was completed in 1682.
The Northern Baptists constituted, 17 May, 1907, at Washington, a representative body, called the "Northern Baptist Convention", whose object is "to give expression to the sentiment of its constituency upon matters of denominational importance and of general religious and moral interest." Governor Hughes of New York was elected president of the new organization.
The earliest Baptist church in the Dominion of Canada was organized at Horton, Nova Scotia, in 1763, by the Rev. Ebenezer Moulton of New England.

MIDDLE EAST (FBW)—In a historic move spurred by new-found religious freedom in Iraq, Baptists there have elected a moderator who has the support of Baptists in other Arab countries to set up a center for ministry in Baghdad.
Though the Catholic and Orthodox churches have had a long-standing presence in Iraq, the formation of a Baptist Union is a first for Iraqi Baptists who anticipate being able to openly practice their faith in the pre-dominantly Muslim country seeking to rebuild after the recent liberation by Coalition forces.
In a special presentation, the newly elected moderator told a group of relief workers God has prepared him to return to his native homeland of Iraq where 15-20 believers are awaiting baptism and one leader will soon be ordained to the Gospel ministry.
