Bay Area union warns of protests over grocery talks | The San Diego Union-Tribune
SAN FRANCISCO – A union representing 30,000 workers is threatening a "major escalation" of protests at San Francisco Bay Area supermarkets unless executives and labor leaders make progress toward a contract by Jan. 24.
Ron Lind, spokesman for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Bay Area Coalition, said managers at Safeway Inc., Albertson's Inc. and Kroger Co., which operates Ralphs supermarkets in the Bay Area, have created an "unnecessary crisis" by letting the workers' contract lapse.
The union is opposed to what leaders call a "two-tiered wage system" that caps the hourly pay of new hires below that of veterans.

Some union workers at the Turtle Bay Resort, the only hotel on the Oahu North Shore, have signed a petition to end a consumer boycott that employees launched against the resort in the fall of 2003 after contract negotiations failed.
Union members have not expressed displeasure with the boycott at any of their meetings, which take place every other week, Ward said, adding that the petition was likely orchestrated by resort management.
The fact that Turtle Bay management distributed a press release about the petition and the resort's San Diego attorney Robert Murphy sent union leaders a letter about the petition the same day it was presented to Local 5 is suspect, Ward said.
