Irrigation canals are man-made waterways for the delivery of water and preceded the use of transportation canals used by barges or narrowboats on smaller canals, and by ships on ship canals that connect to the ocean.
Ancient canals in the West were dwarfed by the Grand Canal of China, the longest canal built in ancient times.
Canals have found another use in the 21st century, as wayleaves for fibre optic telecommunications networks.

Canal boats for the central division of the canal were frequently hauled on the railroad to Columbia and there put into the canal and brought to Hollidaysburg.
Canal boats were not expensive, and a man with a capital of but a few hundred dollars could purchase a boat, employ a few laborers and engage in the general canal transportation business.
The canal was fed at its highest section, usually by a dam across a stream or river, and the water then moved slowly from there to the next section lower, and so on to the end of the canal.

Pennsylvania founder William Penn is given credit for first proposing the construction of a canal between the Susquehanna River and Schuylkill River in 1690.
While the boats and the mule teams were the property of the Union Canal Company, boat captains and their families were expected to live on the boats during the hauling season - boats did not operate in the winter because of the danger posed by ice.
Union Canal Tunnel - Designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1970 and a National Historic Landmark in 1994, the canal's tunnel is the oldest existing transportation tunnel in the United States.

The first canal boat made the trip in 5 days traveling 81 miles and rising to a height of 518 feet near Lebanon where a canal tunnel was built to take the boats through the highest part of the canal.
The Union Canal was to be part of a canal system to the Ohio River at Pittsburgh for the purposes of providing trade to the developing frontier.
The Schuylkill Canal, the Union Canal extension to Pine Grove, the Delaware and Hudson Canal, the Lehigh Canal and the Delaware River Canal were all anthracite canals.

The Union Canal Tunnel Park was dedicated by the Lebanon County Historical Society on October 9, 1988.

Union and Thun refers to two multi-user-paths, The Union Canal Towpath and the Thun Trail ( Thun pronounced Toon).
The Union, part of the Berks County parks system, winds along the beautiful Tulpehocken Creek and what was once the Union Canal, a trade route that served the communities along the Tulpehocken corridor.
The Thun Trail is a rails-to-trails project which is destined to become part of the larger Schuylkill River Greenway Associations goal of a path stretching from Pottsville to Philadelphia.

His thought was to build a canal to follow the upstream course of Tulpehocken Creek from its mouth on the Schuylkill River and the downstream course of the Swatara to its mouth on the Susquehanna.
In 1797 the Conewago Canal, built on the west bank of the Susquehanna below York Haven to enable boats to avoid the rocks and rapids of the Conewago Falls, was declared operable by the state.
As that New York state project went forward between 1817 and 1825, Pennsylvania stock companies improved navigation on the Schuylkill; and the Union Canal Company carried into final effect, in 1828, Penn's idea of joining the Schuylkill with the Susquehanna by a canal along Tulpehocken and Swatara Creeks, thus connecting Middletown with Philadelphia by water.

A plan for the Grand Union Canal entitled "Description of a plan for a central union canal which will lessen the distance and expense of canal navigation between London and Birmingham, etc." was written by Sir W. Cubitt in 1832 (HE4/6).The Morris Canal and Banking Company produced a report to shareholder in 1837 (HE4/28).
The canals predated the railways but by the mid 19th century canals faced competition from the railways and their future was already in doubt.
On the future of canals for recreational purposes there are more recent publications from the Inland Waterways Association, and local groups such as the Regents Canal Group.
