Numerous suggestions regarding the naming of this county exist, however, it is probable that the name sprung from the hope that it would harmonize the difficulties that existed in relation to the County Seats in Wayne and Fayette counties.
Union County is 14 miles from north to south, and 12 wide.
Due to agitation started within a year of establishment of the first County Seat, in accordance with the legislative act of December 21, 1822 the County Seat was moved to Liberty, a more central location, the change being made in 1823.

A.C. Fosdick, a doctor in Liberty, Union County, Indiana, was commissioned on October 18, 1862 as surgeon of the Fifth Cavalry Ninetieth Indiana regiment.
The first folder consists of medical receipts for various diseases and ailments (n.d.); election notices from Boston, Indiana (1847, 1848); a state election notice (1852); a turnpike directors meeting cancellation notice (1854); a medical waver (1862); and a newspaper clipping of the Early History of Hanna's Creek Christian Church (1905).
In addition, a travel diary (1838) written on a camping trip in east central Indiana does not include the author's name.
