MANCHESTER -- A Hillsborough County Superior Court judge has removed a legal roadblock that stood in the way of construction of New Hampshire's first Islamic mosque, on Karatzas Avenue off Wellington Road.
The Islamic Society of Greater Manchester, which has been trying to build a mosque since 1999, obtained city permits in 2003 to build a 13,085-square-foot mosque on a site it owns on Bald Hill.
The organization sued the city after the proposal was twice rejected by the zoning board on the grounds that Karatzas Avenue was not an accepted city street.

Speaking before a House hearing about problems with union democracy, Stephen Manos of Glastonbury testified that after being elected vice president of Local 230 of Laborers' International Union of North America in 1995, he was harassed and threatened by the union's local leadership, including business manager Charles LeConche.
The Laborers' International is basically on a probation period which began three years ago, after the union signed an agreement with the Justice Department.
Extended by one year this February, the agreement gave the union some time to clean itself up, or face a government takeover, according to Carl Biers, executive director of the Association for Union Democracy, a watchdog group for members rights in unions.

Most New Hampshire country music fans over 40 probably picked up their love of that kind of music in the 1940s or '50s by listening to Manchester's WFEA, going to the Lone Star Ranch in Merrimack or listening to one of the Maine radio stations.
One of the genuine New England stars of that era who were country "when country wasn't cool," was Ken MacKenzie, who formed a musical and marital partnership with his wife, Simone.
As for Simone, she was born on the West Side of Manchester, as Simone Labrie.

THE UNION LEADER doesn’t often look to The New York Times for confirmation of our editorial views, but a Times profile of Democratic Presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman put its finger on why he should be considered by New Hampshire’s centrist Democrats and like-minded independent voters.

Lieberman said he would have voted to confirm Judge Bork to the Supreme Court had he been a member of the Senate during the confirmation hearings, according to written minutes of the meeting with Dr. Jack C. Willke, then the NRLC head, and Regina Smith, Connecticut's representative to the group.
