Although Union Pacific was among the first of the U.S. railroads to introduce diesel-powered streamlined passenger trains in the 1930s, the capabilities of these powerful steam locomotives made them the mainstay of UP freight operations throughout the war.
Union Pacific quickly began buying diesel locomotives after the war and steam retreated to a stronghold in Wyoming, where the big engines ran their last miles in the late 1950s.
Union Pacific donated 46 steam locomotives of various types for display in museums and parks across the country.

The Union Pacific Railroad’s Overland Route, which stretches over the Continental Divide between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyoming, had 146 million gross tons of freight travel the line in the year 2000.
Back in 1942, the Union Pacific faced a similar problem of moving an increase of freight and passenger trains over the route due to the war effort.
One of these locomotives is the 3985, which is now, after being restored by employees and volunteers in Cheyenne, part of the Union Pacific steam locomotive program, pulling promotional and railfan passenger train trips across the vast Union Pacific system.

The first time I saw the Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 # 3985 under steam was at Railfair 1981 when on a Sunday morning it had left the grounds to be refueled and watered.
In 1982, the City of Pocatello, Idaho was turning 100 years old and the Union Pacific wanted to be involved in the celebration so it was decided to send the Challenger there.
The Union Pacific after these trips later converted the UP 3985 from being a coal burner to an oil burner and with that, the engine could ran almost anywhere on the UP system and would not be setting track side fires anymore.

This was done by the Union Pacific when they moved 4018 to the museum back in the late 60s.
During the end of their careers (1956, I believe) both Challenger 3985 and Big Boy 4023 were given general overhauls so that they could continue to run for a few more years.
However, 3985 was converted to burn oil and its firebox is not all that different from that of the Big Boy's.
