It is not to be confused with the similarly named United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in New Brighton, Minnesota (affiliated with the United Church of Christ), United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH (affiliated with the United Methodist Church), and Unification Theological Seminary in Barrytown, New York (affiliated with the Unification Church).
Union Theological Seminary is a preeminent independent graduate school of theology, located in Manhattan, in New York City.
The seminary was founded in 1836 under the Presbyterian Church, and is currently affiliated with Columbia University.

Since its formation in 1812, Union Theological Seminary has sustained the intention of its founders to provide education for Christian ministry within the Reformed tradition that is scholarly, pastoral, and engaged with contemporary life.

Union's founders saw "the greatest and most growing community in America" as an ideal place to train ministers, teachers of religion, missionaries, and others for work in churches and benevolent agencies.
After the 1892 heresy trial of Union Professor Charles A. Briggs by the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., the Seminary rescinded the prerogative of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church to veto faculty appointments.
The 1910 move to Union's present campus on upper Broadway was another forward looking step that would bring the Seminary into closer association with major New York institutions: Columbia University, Teachers College, Barnard College, The Riverside Church, The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and churches and community organizations in Harlem.

 The Story of Methodism in the Philippines: Union Theological Seminary
As was stated earlier, Union was founded in 1907 by the Methodist and Presbyterian missions, when the Florence B. Nicholson Seminary (organized in 1906 at Dagupan) and the Ellinwood Bible Training School (organized in 1905 in Manila) were merged into one union institution devoted to theological education.
The Seminary was legally incorporated in 1919; and then it began to add college courses, both for pre-theological students and other students seeking education in a Christian college.
Union Seminary is a member of the Association of Theological Schools in Southeast Asia and is an affiliate member of the American Association of Theological Schools; its position as a leader in theological education in Asia is widely recognized.

NEW YORK, April 19, 2005 -- Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York has joined the growing number of educational institutions in the United States and around the world who have banned the sale of Coca-Cola products on their campuses.
Coca-Cola vending machines will be removed from Union by the close of the semester and replaced by other vending machines; administrative staff members have been instructed not to purchase Coca-Cola products for informal meals and receptions; and Showstoppers, the Seminary’s in-house caterer, has agreed to stop offering Coca-Cola products.

This on-campus sanctuary was constructed as a "stage" for seminary students to practice their preaching skills but unfortunately received little use.
As the wishes of the seminary grew, so did their awareness that the existing building’s ineffective layout could no longer be modified to meet their needs.
The seminary then turned to The Glave Firm, an architectural firm located in Richmond, to not only modify the existing building, but to double its size so that their needs and wishes could be realized.

 Library Journal - Columbia Acquires Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary
Columbia University Libraries announced that it has closed a deal to acquire the Burke Library at the Union Theological Seminary, the largest theological library in the western hemisphere, with holdings of over 700,000 items.
Union is the oldest nondenominational seminary in the nation.
The agreement also was reportedly hastened by the seminary's shrinking endowment, which has fallen to about $60 million from $79 million just a few years ago.

RICHMOND, Va. – The Foundation for Reformed Theology has honored Dr. John Haddon Leith, one of the nation's theological lions during the three decades that he taught at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, with the presentation to the seminary of a portrait of the late theologian and writer.
A presentation of a portrait of the late John Leith recently was made at Union Theological Seminary-PSCE in Richmond, Va. Participating in the ceremony (from left to right) were William T. Thompson III, James C. Goodloe IV, Caroline Leith, William P. Wood and Herbert H. Browne, Jr.
Leith was the Pemberton Professor of Theology at the seminary from 1959-1990 and professor emeritus until his death in 2002.

Memorials to the memory of Dr. John Haddon Leith may be made to a foundation that he established for the explication and application of Reformed faith.
Established in his honor at Union Theological Seminary, the fund was removed from the seminary and placed in a private foundation headed by the Rev. William Wood at First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.

 Wesley Blog: Union Seminary Kicks Out Coke
According to Christian Post, Union Theological Seminary in New York has become the first theological school to boycott Coke on its campus.
While Coke vehemently denies the claims — some of the victims have been managers, not unionists, and a new report by an outside firm hired to weigh the issues found that unions function freely at Coke's Colombian plants — the activist movement has still grown into a hot topic on campuses and in union halls.
Union, by the way, is an ecumenical Protestant seminary not officially affiliated with any denomination.
