New York University - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
New York University was founded in 1831 by a group of prominent New Yorkers — the city's landed class of merchants, bankers, and traders — who felt that New York needed a university designed for young men of the middle class.
This new school would also be non-denominational, unlike Columbia College, which had the support of the Anglican Church and offered sons of the wealthy a classical education. The institution itself was modeled after the University of London.
On April 21, 1831, the new institution was incorporated as the University of the City of New York by the New York State Legislature, though it had been known as New York University since its inception.

As the New York Times asserted in an editorial, "American graduate programs, the envy of the world, are not so fragile that they cannot coexist with unions, or provide workers the rights they enjoy elsewhere in the economy'"(11/25/00).
In addition, a study by Tufts University researchers in 1999 found that 9 out of 10 professors from universities with graduate employee unions felt that the presence of the union did not strain academic relationships between advisors and advisees.
The UAW also represents graduate employees at a number of public universities, including the University of California, the University of Massachusetts, the University of Washington, and California State University, and it is involved in other organizing drives in the private sector as well.

New York University v. International Union, et al.
In Leland Stanford Junior University, 214 NLRB 621 (1974), the Board held that the university's graduate research assistants in the Physics department, who received non-taxable stipends for conducting research that was required for their dissertations, were not employees under the Act.
There, the research assistants' relationship with the University was not grounded on the performance of a given task where both the task and the time of its performance was designated and controlled by the employer.
New Hampshire, 354 U.S. Although the mission of a university is clearly different than that of an economically motivated business, this distinction is not a valid basis to exclude teachers from the definition of employee.

After a two-year effort against a classic anti-union campaign, the part-time faculty of New School University in New York City proved again that given a choice most workers would join a union.
Workers believed that the progressive roots and liberal tradition of the university would mean a neutral response to the faculty’s right to organize.
