Despite a nasty employer campaign that included harassment and discipline of union supporters, plant closing threats, and other anti-union activities, Pemco workers stood their ground and won their June 13 election by a 36-14 vote.
The biggest difference in the two campaigns was the work of UAW Region 9 members who made house calls to Palnut workers, distributed flyers, sat in on organizing meetings, and convinced the Mountainside, N.J. workers that the union was the ticket to respect and dignity in the workplace.
UAW Local 267 volunteers from Breeze Eastern in nearby Union City were invaluable in the campaign because both Breeze and Palnut are owned by Trans Technologies Corp. UAW members from Locals 731 (Trenton, N.J.), 980 (Edison), and 2327 (Vineland) also provided strong assistance in the campaign.
