The Union of Atrecht (French: Arras) was an accord signed on January 6, 1579 in Atrecht (Arras), under which the southern states of the Spanish Netherlands, today in Wallonia and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais (and Picardy) régions in France, expressed their loyalty to the Spanish king Philip II and recognised the landlord, Don Juan.
The regions that favoured the Union, but did not sign it, were Namur, Luxembourg and the Duchy of Limburg.

The concept for Dietsland first became significant in the early 20th century and reached its peak before World War II when it was advocated by irredentists in the Netherlands and Flanders who were influenced by the progress of 'Greater Germany' next door.
But its roots go back to the Union of Utrecht and the Dutch Revolt, in which the Seventeen Provinces (or Low Countries, De Nederlanden) were separated.
Some (now) Walloon and (now) French parts of the Low Countries chose the side of the Spanish king by the Union of Atrecht, the Dutch-speaking parts declared themselves independent in 1581, but the final frontier was defined by the victories of the Spanish under Alexander Farnese, duke of Parma.

Prompted by the new Spanish governor Alexander Farnese (Duke of Parma), on January 6 1579 the southern states (mostly now in Belgium) signed the Union of Atrecht, expressing their loyalty to the Spanish king.
In response to the Union of Atrecht, William was able to unite the northern protestant states of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland and the province of Groningen with the signing of the Union of Utrecht later the same month, on January 23, 1579.
This union would later (1581) lead to the independence from Spain, forming the United Provinces of the Netherlands (also known as the States General and sometimes the Dutch Republic).
