Unionist Party (Canada) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Unionist Party was formed in 1917 by Members of Parliament (MPs) in Canada who supported the "Union government" formed by Sir Robert Borden during World War I.
Borden attempted to continue the Unionist Party after the war and when Arthur Meighen succeeded him in 1920, he renamed it the "National Liberal and Conservative Party" in the hope of making the coalition permanent.
Following the defeat of Meighen's government, the "National Liberal and Conservative Party" changed its name to the "Liberal-Conservative Party of Canada", although it was commonly known as the "Conservative Party".

Conservative Party of Canada (historical) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As a result of World War I and the Conscription Crisis of 1917, the party joined with pro-conscription Liberals to become the "Unionist Party", led by Robert Borden from 1917 to 1920, and then the "National Liberal and Conservative Party" until 1922.
The roots of the party are in the pre-confederation coalition government of 1854 the parti bleu of George-Étienne Cartier (see also Quebec Conservative Party) and Ontario liberals and conservatives led by John A. MacDonald.
It was out of this coalition that the Liberal-Conservative Party (generally known as the Conservative Party) was formed and it was this period that formed the basis for confederation in 1867.

History of the Conservative Party of Canada - Canadian History
The party came into existence in answer to the radical policies of the extreme wing of the Reform or Liberal party; but it promptly justified its existence by stealing two of the planks in the platform of its opponents, the secularization of the Clergy Reserves and the abolition of the seigniorial tenure.
It has become predominantly the urban party in Canada, as opposed to the rural; the Protestant, as opposed to the Roman Catholic; the English, as opposed to the French; the privileged, as opposed to the under-privileged.
But the Liberal-Conservative party is still mainly the party of economic as distinct from political nationalism within the British Empire, of the industrial as opposed to the agricultural interests in the Dominion, of the English and Protestant elements in the country as opposed to the French and Roman Catholic.
