 Indexed Units of Account
An indexed unit of account is a unit of value defined by a formula in terms of an index such as the consumer price index.
Indexed units of account should be widely used to define many prices and deferred payments even in low-inflation countries such as the United States, since they allow these prices and payments to be set in such a way as to respond appropriately, and automatically, to economic contingencies.
Since the units of account shown here are defined in terms of government indices with reliable publication dates, and since the formulae for the indices are defined here unambiguously, people could in the meantime begin using these units for defining actual prices and deferred payments, by referring to this note for definition.

Our unit of account is defined in our medium of exchange, but it is meaningful only because we can observe prices on real goods expressed in it.
As it would be pointless to define the meter as the length traveled by light in vacuum during 1/299 792 458 of a second if we could not compare this length with anything else, it would be pointless to define our unit of account in something that is not priced.

EconPapers: Designing Indexed Units of Account
Abstract: An indexed unit of account is a unit of measurement defined using an index such as a consumer price index so that prices defined in terms of these units will automatically adjust to changing economic conditions.
Evidence on sticky prices and money illusion, and evidence from countries (notably Chile) that have created indexed units of account, suggests that creating such units is an important policy option for governments in countries with unstable price levels.
Results from the model suggest some design elements for an indexed unit of account: institutions to promote broad use of the unit for pricing, and a formal policy to increase the frequency of index computation when the price level becomes more volatile.
