  Unitarian Jihad - UUWiki
Unitarian Jihad is a satirical religious/humanist movement which opposes religious extremism of all kinds through peaceful means.
The concept of the Unitarian Jihad originated in a column by writer Jon Carroll which was originally published in the San Francisco Chronicle on April 8 2005.
The column intentionally juxtaposed the Unitarian Universalist principles of a creedless faith and rational discussion with the militant Islamic concept of Jihad, and used the concept of having received an anonymous communique from the then non-existent group.

The Unitarian Jihad: An Internet Phenomenon
Even there it is very specific in the differentiation between a "lesser jihad" which constitutes military struggle and a "greater jihad", which is the struggle within one's self against temptation and, especially in the case of the Mu'tazili Caliphate, to represent one's struggle to understand the world through scientific investigation.
Where the Unitarian Jihad seems to depart from traditional Unitarian behaviour it its suggestion and indeed their insistence, that opponents to the above policy propositions are treated not with reasoned discussion, as they are above reason, not with light-hearted humour, but with ridicule; purposeful, disparaging, contemptuous mocking.
In this manner, the technologically savvy, anarchic, and disrespectful agenda of the Unitarian jihad (and they are poking fun at our church procedures as well!) serve as an ideal complement, but not as a replacement, to traditional strategy of carefully considered and reasoned proposals.

Philocrites: How's the Unitarian Jihad doing?
Unitarian Jihad is a nascent satirical religious/humanist movement, which intentionally juxtaposes the Unitiarian Universalist principles of a creedless faith and rational discussion with the Islamic concept of Jihad, specifically the use of that word in connection with the idea of a "holy war".
Satire is inherent in the organization of Unitarian Jihad, as reference is often made to the committee model used by most Unitarian Universalist congregations, while Carroll's lead in using names like "Brother Flaming Sword of Moderation" is followed to parody both the language used by Islamic fundamentalist groups and the principles of Unitarian Universalism.
I found the Unitarian Jihad thing beautiful for a lot of reasons, but I guess I suspected from the beginning that it was a sort of hijacking of the UU name, and never really held UUs responsible for it.

"Unitarian" is the first part of the name of our religion and is the religion that preceded Unitarian Universalism prior to the merger of Unitarian and Universalism (learn more about our history here [and a link, of course]).
"Jihad" has been associated with terrorists, but one of the definitions, according to Merriam Webster, is "a crusade for a principle or belief." Unitarian Universalists have principles, which we act upon.
But even if those who found our Unitarian Jihad web page never visit our church, they have now heard of Unitarian Universalism and then next time they hear about it or the time after that, they may decide to visit a UU community somewhere.
