United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAUA), the primary subsidiary of the UAL Corporation, is a major airline of the United States headquartered in unincorporated Elk Grove Township, Illinois, near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, the airline's largest traffic hub, with 650 daily departures.
United was the launch customer for a number of aircraft types, including the Douglas DC-10 (with American Airlines) and several Boeing aircraft: the 727 (with Eastern Air Lines), the 737-200, the 767, and the 777.
UAL traces its claim to be the oldest commercial airline in the United States to the Varney Airlines air mail service of Walter Varney.

United Air Lines and the modern American commercial airline industry were born out of small private companies that contracted in the 1920s with the U.S. postal service to deliver mail to the Pacific coast.
Soon, United was grossing $500 million in annual sales and ranked as the world's largest passenger airline, ahead of competitors such as American and Eastern.
For a brief period during the late 1980s, United's name was changed to the Allegis Corp. In 1994, the company's employees became its new owners, as they received a majority of stock in exchange for wage concessions.

Under a deal announced last week, United, a division of Chicago-based UAL Corp., is revamping the way its aircraft mechanics get maintenance information and parts illustrations using a global content management application from Enigma Inc.
United Services operates 36 repair stations at airports around the world where scheduled maintenance is done, Taylor said, and sends repair crews to other locations when mechanical breakdowns occur away from a designated service center.
United Services began its deployment of the application last month and expects to have it completed by June, Taylor said.

That might be true now, but United has been building its Dulles hub to add more north/south flights, and I just got a frequent flyer article from US Air extolling their transcontinental flights.
In addition to the above, my personal feeling is that United is a greedy group of pompous people who feel they are doing you a favor to allow you to fly on their airline.
