Israeli Arabs may play pivotal role in coming elections (November 15, 2002)
The October 2000 riots, the continued stalemate in the peace process, the sharp rise in unemployment -- particularly in Arab towns and villages -- and the Arab public's discontent with its legislators have led to widespread frustration among Israel's million Arabs.
The 10 Arab legislators currently are split among five parties: The United Arab List (3), Hadash (3), the National Arab Party (2), Balad (1) and the Arab List for Change (1).
All the Arab parties already have called for unity, but each wants to make sure that its own people would stand at the head of a united list.

United Arab List - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The United Arab List, Balad, and the single-member Ta'al (which ran on a joint ticket with the United Arab List in the 2006 election, the coalition known as Ra'am-Ta'al) are the Arab parties currently in the Knesset, and along with the Jewish-Arab Hadash, make up most of the Arab representation in the Knesset.
The United Arab List was established in 1996, as a union between two political parties: The Arab Democratic Party (Hezb al-Democraty al-Arabi / Miflaga Democratit Aravit) and elements related to the southern faction Islamic Movement and to the National Unity Front.

Now that Hadash or communist-led list and the Islamist-backed United Arab List (UAL) led by Abdel-Wahab Darawsha are supporting One Israel's Ehud Barak for prime minister, I expect the majority of Palestinians will vote for Barak in the first round.
Thus the communists believe that the Arab minority must forge alliance with progressive Jews to transform Israel from being an ethnic state to being a democratic state.
The Islamists, who are the main force in the UAL, conceive of identity in religious terms, which pits them not only against Israel's Jewish majority but also against Palestinian Christians, as the recent clashes in Nazareth attest.

Aside from the heckling by members of Arab parties, however, Peretz's speech was widely echoed by MKs across the political spectrum, including opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu, who added that Hizbullah posed a strategic threat, and that Israel therefore required a strategic victory.
