The United Auto Workers (UAW), officially the United Automobile, Aerospace & Agricultural Implement Workers of America International Union, is one of the largest labor unions in North America, with more than 700,000 members in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico organized into approximately 950 union locals.
In the 1960s, the UAW used its strategy of negotiating a contract with one major auto maker and applying it to the other to secure a number of new benefits for auto workers, including fully paid hospitalization and sick leave benefits at General Motors, profit sharing in American Motors.

The United Auto Workers union said Monday it reached a tentative, four-year contract agreement with DaimlerChrysler and is continuing to negotiate with General Motors and Ford Motor.
Union representatives had earlier told their members they were close to new labor agreements with Ford and GM but said that difficult issues remained.
Gettelfinger has insisted the union would not retreat on health care benefits, so some analysts said negotiators were likely to reach agreements that would give automakers more flexibility in plant closings in exchange for continued low-cost medical coverage.

Ward's Auto World: Here we go again, it's contract time - United Auto Workers union negotiates with the Big Three ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-12)
The United Auto Workers union and the Big Three automakers are bargaining on a new labor contract in the midst of rising company worries about health-care and pension costs and unflagging union demands to save jobs.
For their part, the auto companies want more operating flexibility, and that most likely means the ability to close under-used plants and perhaps run other plants on three shifts.
The union also will seek inflation protection for retirees and a commitment from the automakers to support national health care as a means of combating skyrocketing medical costs.

Remaining hourly workers would continue to be covered by the contract with Ford, which has agreed to meet its salary obligations to UAW members.
In addition, 900 hourly workers who were hired under a separate Visteon agreement will become Ford employees and will get a significant increase in wages and benefits, the UAW said.
UAW Local 849 president Eugene Morey, who represents workers at Visteon's Ypsilanti, Mich., plant, said the vast majority of workers there approved the deal even though it requires them to be transferred to a nearby plant that will be absorbed by Ford.

The union has said it will work within the contract, which could mean accepting higher co-payments or higher prices for prescriptions.
Still, Bunch said the union is a long way off from striking over health care issues, in part because members know a strike would hurt sales and deepen problems for the world's largest automaker.
If workers at his plant went on strike, "it would take us another 25 years to get back to where we are today, in terms of people having faith in the company," Bunch said.

The United Auto Workers union told local leaders Thursday that it won't reopen its contract with General Motors Corp. before 2007 but may ask workers to shoulder more of the troubled automaker's health care costs, according to several people who attended the meeting.
The agreement requires around 35,000 Chrysler hourly workers and retirees to start paying deductibles of between $100 and $1,000 for health care that previously was free.
Bunch said union members need to take seriously the threat that GM could cut retirees' health care benefits or declare bankruptcy.

The installation of Ronald Gettelfinger as the president of the United Auto Workers union is a fitting demonstration of the moribund character of the organization, which has lost over half of its membership in the last three decades.
Like many of those who make up the trade union bureaucracy, Gettelfinger is a definite social type: a middle class careerist who has nothing but contempt for those who work for a living in the auto plants.
During the same period, while top auto executives have seen their pay rise by 109 percent—not counting the millions more they have made in bonuses, stocks options and other compensation—autoworkers’ real wages have grown by only 1.3 percent.

Workers in the automobile, transportation and metalworking industries who are engaged in hazardous waste generation operations will be targeted for both awareness and technician-level training.
The ultimate goal of the project is to reduce adverse health effects and injuries among the target populations by promoting hazard recognition, improved facility emergency response programs and work practices, prevention of uncontrolled chemical releases, and community and worker input into emergency response planning.
A second goal is to develop and deliver emergency response curricula using innovative training methods, peer trainers, and participatory techniques, and demonstrate the impact of these on safety and health so as to promote the implementation of such model programs beyond the target trainee population.

With the decline of the domestic auto industry accelerating, the United Auto Workers union has agreed to a baby-step rollback of its vaunted "first dollar" health care coverage, which has long made assembly work at a Big Three automaker one of the most attractive blue-collar jobs in America.
Chrysler workers were informed in a letter on March 10, and the development was first reported this weekend by The Detroit News.
While Chrysler will reap only modest savings from the step, and while auto workers still have coverage that is the envy of many white-collar workers, the move is deeply symbolic and a sign of the union's acknowledgment of the competitive pressures from Toyota and other foreign-based competitors.
