Of the two major U.S. parties, the Democratic Party is to the left of the Republican Party, though its politics are not as consistently leftist as the traditional social democratic and labor parties in much of the rest of the world.
Southern Democrats took notice of the fact that 1964 Republican Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater had voted against the Civil Rights Act (an unusual departure from his previous support for such legislation), and in the 1964 election Goldwater's only electoral victories outside his home state of Arizona were in Southern states.
Defeated Democrat Hubert Humphrey's electoral votes came mainly from the Northern states, marking a dramatic shift from the 1948 election 20 years earlier, when the losing Republican candidate's electoral votes were mainly concentrated in the Northern states.

The main constituent parties are the Oromo National Congress, Ethiopian Social Democratic Federal Party, Southern Ethiopia People's Democratic Coalition, All-Amhara People's Organization and the Ethiopian Democratic Unity Party.
At the last legislative elections, 15 May 2005, the UEDF won 52 out of 527 seats.

The former deputy leader of UDF and the floor leader of the parliamentary group of the United Democratic Forces (UtDF) Ekaterina Mihailova said that she would remain in Parliament with her 27 colleagues who resigned from the UDF.
Last week, the UDF group in Parliament urged their former fellow party members to resign as MPs, saying they no longer represented the choice made by voters in 2001.
Tsanev, who was one of the MPs who signed the petition for the resignation of Nadezhda Mihailova, but who attended the UDF conference, said that he could not remain in the party after the conference, which kept the status quo and split the union.
