| | Livingston Smith - Between Colony and Independence: Constitutional Modernization in the Cayman Islands |
 | | Self-determination, as far as the Cayman Islands is concerned, is being in a position in which we can look after ourselves financially and keep the door open for the UK to represent us around the world and to be a part of the British system, judicially or otherwise. |
 | | In the case of the Cayman Islands, it is a convergence of political, economic, psychological and socio-cultural forces which is at play. |
 | | The islands do not have a history of this and the leaders, careful as they must be, to maintain the viability of the economy which is anchored in tourism and banking, are constrained by this fact and, hopefully, are unlikely to jeopardize the future of the islands for political gain. |
