Eurovision Song Contest   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Eurovision is the television network supervised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and was established in the early 1950s to serve two functions: to share the costs of programming with international interest between the broadcasting services of member nations, and to promote cultural appreciation and identification throughout western Europe.
The Eurovision Song Contest is a long, live Saturday evening showcase of pop music talent that typically ranges from the indescribably bad, through the insufferably indifferent, to a few catchy little numbers.
In estimating the significance of the Eurovision Song Contest, perhaps less attention should be given to its bloated festivity or the derivative nature of the contenders' music.

United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an overview of the performance of the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest since they first took part in 1957, the competition's second year.
It should be noted that while the Eurovision Song Contest is taken quite seriously in some European countries, and seen as a source of national pride if they score highly, it is seen as more of a joke in the United Kingdom, mainly due to the alleged "political/regional voting patterns".
In 1999 the rules changed and the United Kingdom (along with France, Germany and Spain) are automatically allowed to participate irrespective of their recent scores because they are the highest-paying European Broadcasting Union subscribers.

 Eurovision Song Contest 1992
For those of you who don't know, the Eurovision Song Contest is an annual contest organised by the state run TV stations of European nations to find the best new popular song.
Now 46 years later, Eurovision continues to supply sport and news to the whole of Europe, and beyond, now by satellite, but the only programme still identified with Eurovision is the song contest.
The main contest's songs are judged by panels of sixteen in each country who give votes for their favourite songs.

 Waterloo
The United Kingdom hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in the seaside resort of Brighton in 1974, as Luxembourg had won at home in the previous year and the EBU decided that it would be unfair to ask the tiny principality to stage the competition again.
The United Kingdom was second in the running order and were represented by Australian Olivia Newton-John, who had already had had a string of worldwide hits with a series of soft country songs, but her Eurovision entry was very different.
The song was produced by Michael B. Tretow who had a distinctive "wall of sound" technique, similar to that of Phil Spector and which was very fashionable in the mid 1970's thanks to the hits of Roy Wood and his band Wizzard.

 EUROVISION SONG CONTEST
Bizarrely, the UK's song was chosen after the date of the international final but the EBU adopted the idea of contacting the international juries by telephone and this was introduced in 1957 and used until 1993.
Even though the Junior Eurovision Song Contest was approved by the EBU, it hasn't been very successful, and has generally had unsatisfactory audience ratings, particularly in the United Kingdom, where from 2004 it was only shown on digital channel ITV2.

Samantha Janus @ Filmbug   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Her first taste of the public spotlight came when she won the UK's Song for Europe in 1991, entitling her to represent the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest, to be held in Rome.
In retrospect, her dubious distinction is that the main impact of her 'success' was a major rethink of the process by which the UK selected its Eurovision entry, since her case was apparently seen as an exemplar of everything that had been going wrong.
In the present-day contest, simply the sight of Samantha and what she wore in Rome - or rather, the considerable amount she didn't wear - would arguably have every chance of yielding a bonanza of votes, regardless of the song or singing.
