The rules of the first contest allowed the participants to enter a maximum of two songs each, and it was strongly recommended that the songs be selected at a national final involving the participation of the public, to render the contest as popular as possible.
The jury was to judge the contest from a small television screen and each jury member awarded a mark for each song, ranging from 1 to 10 in ascending order of merit, on a paper provided for the purpose.
The song obtaining the most points was awarded the “1956 Grand Prix of the Eurovision Song Contest”.

Eurovision is the television network supervised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and was established in the early 1950s to serve two functions: to share the costs of programming with international interest between the broadcasting services of member nations, and to promote cultural appreciation and identification throughout western Europe.
This became the Eurovision Song Contest, the first of which was held in Lugano, Switzerland, and was relayed to less than ten nations.
While the main claim to fame of the contest must be the "discovery" of Abba, it has also given the world such lyrical masterpieces as La La La, Ding Ding A Dong, A-Ba-Ni-Bi and even Boom Bang-A-Bang from the United Kingdom (or Royaume-Uni as we are known once a year).

The voting patterns in the Eurovision Song Contest have attracted attention from various researchers, spawning a small cross-disciplinary field of what might be called 'eurovisiopsephology' incorporating insights from politics, sociology and computer science.
The pioneering study of the contest was carried out by Yair (1995) who used multidimensional social network analysis of the voting over the period 1975-1992, representing the period between the end of the Oil Crisis and the signing of the Treaty of Maastricht.
The contest now operates successfully on two levels, appealing equally to western post-modernists who revel in the very tastelessness and contempt for "serious" pop music that appalled the previous intellectual generation, and also to emerging states rediscovering the pan-European spirit of the contest's founders.

The United Kingdom is one of Eurovision's most successful nations, with 5 wins (the last in 1997, with 'Love Shine a Light') and an extraordinary 15 2nd places, including most famously Cliff Richard and 'Congratulations' in 1968, and most recently Imaani with 'Where are you?' in 1998.
His winning song, 'Hold on to our love', is surprisingly good, if slightly old-fashioned - a gentle, guitar-led ballad in the same mould as 'Rock 'n' roll kids' (Ireland's 1994 winner) or 'Fly on the wings of love' (winner for Denmark in 2000).
