Labour Party (UK) - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The Labour Party's origins lie in the late 19th century, when it became apparent that there was an increasing need for a third party in Britain to represent the interests and needs of the large working-class population (for instance, the 1899 Lyons vs. Wilkins judgement that limited certain types of picketing).
The ILP under James Maxton disaffiliated from the Labour Party in 1932, removing a substantial proportion of the left of the party from membership.
Labour's chances of electoral success were further damaged by the fact that the Thatcher government's popularity was on the rise after successfully guiding the country to victory in the Falklands War.

The number of constituency parties affiliated rose from 73 in 1906 to 179 by 1914 and before the outbreak of war prevented the expected election, Labour was prepared to field a record number of candidates.
With Labour heavily defeated in the 1979 election, the party began a new period of soul-searching.
Labour's agenda was fully costed, to avoid the arguments over tax that had dogged them in 1992, and centred on five pledges: education; crime; health; jobs and economic stability.

Labour party - HighBeam Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The Labour party was founded in 1900 after several generations of preparatory trade union politics made possible by the Reform Bills of 1867 and 1884, which enfranchised urban workers.
In 1918, Labour withdrew completely from the coalition, and in 1922 it became the second largest party in the House of Commons and thus the official opposition.
The reversal of the party's position on Britain's entry into the European Community (now the European Union), after having earlier supported it, and a renewed call for further nationalization of industry were indications of a greater left-wing militancy within the party.

The Labour Party - United Kingdom Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television - Find Articles
Labour leader Tony Blair was presented in 'presidential' style as a middle-class candidate.
Remarkably, by Labour standards, the broadcast began with the statement: 'Business is more powerful than government.' In this way, the Labour Party came out fighting on Tory Party soil with a statement which observers might never have expected to have heard from an aspiring Labour government.
This compounded Labour's focus on their leader and the consequent and conspicuous absence from the broadcast campaign of other members of the shadow cabinet--to say nothing of the hundreds of rank-and-file candidates--who were also standing for election.

The Labour Party was one of the original parties in Janda's 1950-1962 ICPP study.
Losses in by-elections reduced the Labour majority to one seat in October 1976, and early in 1977 Labour entered an agreement with the small Liberal Party for votes to remain in office.
But splits in the party over membership in the European Economic Community (which Wilson favored, but more radicals members of his party and powerful unions opposed) and a failing economy led to Wilson's resignation in March of 1976, to be succeeded by James Callaghan.
