Just before the Iraqi election, Representative Lynn Woolsey introduced a resolution--with twenty-four Democratic co-sponsors--demanding the "immediate withdrawal" of troops, insisting that "Iraq is no closer to becoming a stable democracy than it was two years ago" and that this "losing effort" was not worth the life of another US soldier.
The Democrats' leaders in Congress have tried to straddle the issue, promoting what might be called an "exit-strategy strategy." Both Senate minority leader Harry Reid and House minority leader Nancy Pelosi have called on Bush to develop an "exit strategy." Neither has suggested starting or scheduling the removal of troops.
Liberals need to find a means to bridge the gap between Americans' belief in liberal solutions and their willingness to trust liberals to enact them.

The Liberal Democrats report that $3.7 billion is missing from the Development Fund for Iraq (DFI), a fund established in 2003 by the United Nations (UN) to hold Iraq's oil revenues.
Helen Collinson of Christian Aid said, "For the entire year that the CPA has been in power in Iraq it has been impossible to tell with any accuracy what the CPA has been doing with Iraq's money." The CPA said Iraqi oil revenues amounted to $10.8 billion between March 2003 and June 21, 2004.
But the Liberal Democrats say the oil revenues are higher -- between $12.2 billion and $14.5 billion.
