The United Methodist Church is the largest Methodist, the largest mainline Christian denomination and, after the Southern Baptist Convention, the second-largest Protestant denomination in the United States.
The first Methodist clergy were ordained by John Wesley, a priest in the Church of England, because of the crisis caused by the American Revolution which cut the Methodists in the States off from the Church of England and its sacraments.
The United Methodist Church is in full communion with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Moravian Church.

Its purpose is "to gather, preserve, hold title to, and disseminate materials on the history of The United Methodist Church and its antecedents." Through its publications, workshops, research services and other programs the staff of the General Commission seeks to fulfill its mission to help the Church remember its roots and development.
Methodist History, the official historical journal of The United Methodist Church, is published quarterly by the General Commission.

 History of the Church
On April 23, 1968, The United Methodist Church was created when Bishop Reuben H. Mueller, representing The Evangelical United Brethren Church, and Bishop Lloyd C. Wicke of The Methodist Church joined hands at the constituting General Conference in Dallas, Texas.
With the words, "Lord of the Church, we are united in Thee, in Thy Church and now in The United Methodist Church," the new denomination was given birth by two churches that had distinguished histories and influential ministries in various parts of the world.
Although Methodists, Evangelicals, and United Brethren each had published strong statements condemning war and advocating peaceful reconciliation among the nations, the strength of their positions was largely lost with American involvement in the hostilities of World War II.
