The United National Independence Party is a political party in Zambia.
The new constitution and the national elections that followed in December 1973 were the final steps in achieving what was called a "one-party participatory democracy." National policy was formulated by the Central Committee of party that had become the sole legal party in Zambia.
The constitution stipulated that the sole candidate in elections for the office of president was the person selected to be the president of UNIP by the party's general conference.

At the last legislative elections, held on 2 April 2004, the party was the leading member of the United National Front that won 37.8% of the popular vote and 82 out of 225 seats.
General disaffection with the economic policies of the United Front coalition and its brutal crackdown against a 1971 Maoist insurrection by the JVP brought the UNP to power in 1977.

UNIP was the ruling party in Zambia for 27 years before it lost the historic multiparty elections in 1991 to the Movement of Multiparty Democracy (MMD).
Among the controversies surrounding the congress is a decision by one of Kaunda's sons, Tilyenji, to contest the position of secretary general, the third highest post in the party.
