 Peacekeeping Missions
On 14 July, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees urgently appealed for trucks, water tankers, aircraft and funds to meet the crisis.
It also urged the Government of Rwanda and RPF to conclude quickly a comprehensive peace agreement, and requested the Secretary-General to report on the contribution the United Nations could make to assist OAU in implementing this agreement and to begin contingency planning in the event that the Council decided that such a contribution was needed.
National reconciliation would require both a political understanding between the former leadership of the country and the present Government and the establishment of conditions in the camps, and in Rwanda itself, conducive to the return of the refugees.

Little did I know that I would soon be on my way to Rwanda, along with a contingent of over 300, as part of the Australian Medical Support Force UNAMIR II (United Nations Assistance Mission For Rwanda).
The force’s task was to establish a hospital facility to provide health care to the 5,500 United Nations troops who were part of UNAMIR II.
