The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA or ECA) was established in 1958 to encourage economic cooperation among its member states (the nations of the African continent).
It is one of five regional commissions under the administrative direction of United Nations headquarters.
With its main offices in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the ECA has 53 member states and reports to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

When I retired from the United Nations, I was honored by the Association for Progressive Communications (headquarters in Johannesburg), which established the annual Nancy Hafkin Prize for innovation in information technology in Africa.
