 About ESCWA
The Economic Commission for Western Asia (ECWA) was established by Economic and Social Council resolution 1818 (LV) of 9 August 1973 as the successor to the United Nations Economic and Social Office in Beirut (UNESOB).
ESCWA is a part of the Secretariat of the United Nations and is one of the five regional commissions which report to the Economic and Social Council, the principal organ of the United Nations responsible for coordinating economic and social activities in the United Nations system.
The other regional commissions are: the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

 Who's Who - Intergovernmental organisations
ESCAP was created in 1947 and is the main organisation for United Nations activities in the Asia and Pacific region, the largest of the 5 UN Regional Commissions and represents some 60 percent of the world's population.
UNCSD was established as a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council by Council decision 1993/207.
IFAD, a specialised agency of the United Nations, was established in 1977 as an international financial institution as one of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference.

 International obligations - Statistics New Zealand
Statistics New Zealand has obligations to a number of international agencies such as the United Nations, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

 South Pacific Commission -- 1988
The South Pacific Commission serves as the implementing agency for SPREP, with a Co-ordinating Group consisting of SPEC (the South Pacific Bureau for Economic Co-operation), SPC, ESCAP (the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific), and UNEP (the United Nations Environment Programme).
The South Pacific Commission was established in 1947 by an agreement signed in Canberra, Australia, known as the Canberra Agreement, by the Governments of Australia, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

 UN Enable - Promoting the rights of Persons with Disabilities - Contribution by National Human Rights Institutions from the Commonwealth and Asia Pacific Region
Dr Justice A.S. Anand, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of India and the Chairperson of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions, Dr Morna Nance, Acting Director, British Council India and Mr Orest Nowosad, United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, spoke at the inaugural session.
In addition to the application of existing international human rights law, the Convention should contain specific articles dealing with specialised areas and issues relating to civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights that, by the very nature of the context of disability, require codification, with due respect being paid to the principles of natural justice.
In their statements the distinguished speakers highlighted the important role of national human rights institutions in protecting and promoting the human rights and dignity of persons with disabilities and in the possible development of a proposed new United Nations Convention in this respect.
