Its activities cover a wide range of issues, from atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems, the promotion of environmental science and information, to an early warning and emergency response capacity to deal with environmental disasters and emergencies.

The North American Node of UNEP GRID, located at the USGS EROS Data Center, is in the forefront of applying information technology tools such as remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and web mapping to address the relationships between the environment and human populations.

It calls on nations to protect coral reefs from pollution, damaging activites such as dynamite and cyanide fishing and, by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, the deleterious effects of climate change.
It is working with relevant groups including marine park authorities, local fishermen, tour boat operators, hotel owners and others, to help boost environmentally-friendly management at reef sites of the kind underway for the Bazaruto Archipelago.
